The early stories in this collection are definitely among the best I've read from Link, "The Specialist's Hat" probably her very best. But Link also seems to create a quickly spiraling time effect with her Donald Barthelme meets Amy Hempel style. She has a good ear for rhythm and sentence juxtaposition, but some of stories quickly fizzle and left me checking the number of pages left, and when that number was more than ten, I just wanted to flip forward to the next story rather than bear through.

Kelly Link is probably my favorite short story author and this collection does not disappoint. My favorite story by her is "Stone Animals", which belongs to another collection. But the elements that make that short story my favorite (anxious anticipation, curious ambiguity, dark humor...) can be found in many of the stories in this book.

I have to admit that if I could, I would have also nominated Kelly Link's other two collections, "Magic for Beginners" and "Pretty Monsters" as well. I finally chose "Stranger Things Happen" because it was the collection that started me on my Kelly Link kick (I read all three collections in a month). Link's style is touch odd (which I love), her prose is both lyrical and a little disjointed, her stories are a touch creepy and/or dark and/or just plain strange. The stories in "Stranger Things Happen" keep you on your toes, make you laugh and get that prickly feeling at the back of your neck and honestly make you think. You don't want to read these stories on cruise-control. Most of them have good meat on them, and some of that meat takes a little work, but I can honestly say that when you're done, you'll feel full and satisfied.

I'm so glad I listened to all the friends who told me I needed to read this book. Kelly Link shares stories that unfold like dreams, could be classed as urban fantasy or magical realism, but that really just stand apart as a genre unto themselves, leaving the reader without the comfort of the familiar. These stories have stayed in my head long after I actually read the book, creeping back into my conscious thoughts like a memory of an uncertain encounter.

Best dang book of short stories I've ever read. Written with a light hand, these tales are spooky, absurd, crazy, and bittersweet. There's ghosts and Greek gods and haunted cellos and retold fairy tales; every piece leaves you wanting more but tells you just enough that you can daydream the rest of the story while staring off into space over the top of the book. Delicious!

Kelly Link stories are puzzles for the reader to solve, pieces joined in an unanticipated whole. While none of these stories grant much in the way of closure, they are all compelling reads.

This book was picked up on a whim and I liked it so much I'm about to buy Kelly Link's new short story collection, Magic for Beginners. The stories have that wonderful slippery feeling that occurs when one notices strange things happening in everyday life. Her characters are engaging, even enchanting at times, and the tiny elements of the world that surrounds them remind us to pay attention to the little things around us and how unexpected they can be. It really played up to my own tendency towards curiosity and exploration, true to the cover illustration, and drew me along a wild prose garden path each step of the way. A great little collection of stories, each very individual, each a little strange, but all illuminating one facet or another of human lives and hearts. Bravo!
