Brené Brown has been researching the effects of shame and imperfection for years. A master of knowing what causes us to shrink from self-love, Brown encourages us to discover ourselves and move past the shame we have internalized through the pressures of our perfection-obsessed society. A great read for anyone who needs a reminder that each of us deserves love.  Recommended By Alex Y., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

When our embarrassments and fears lie, we often listen to them anyway. They thwart our gratitude, acceptance, and compassion — our goodness. They insist, "I am not worthy." But we are worthy — of self-discovery, personal growth, and boundless love. With Brené Brown's game-changing New York Times bestseller The Gifts of Imperfection — which has sold more than 2 million copies in more than 30 different languages, and Forbes recently named one of the "Five Books That Will Actually Change Your Outlook On Life" — we find courage to overcome paralyzing fear and self-consciousness, strengthening our connection to the world.

A motivational and inspiring guide to wholehearted living, rather than just the average self-help book, with this groundbreaking work Brené Brown, Ph.D., bolsters the self-esteem and personal development process through her characteristic heartfelt, honest storytelling. With original research and plenty of encouragement, she explores the psychology of releasing our definitions of an "imperfect" life and embracing living authentically. Brown's "ten guideposts" are benchmarks for authenticity that can help anyone establish a practice for a life of honest beauty — a perfectly imperfect life.

Now more than ever, we all need to cultivate feelings of self-worth, as well as acceptance and love for ourselves. In a world where insults, criticisms, and fears are spread too generously alongside messages of unrealistic beauty, attainment, and expectation, we look for ways to "dig deep" and find truth and gratitude in our lives. A new way forward means we can't hold on too tightly to our own self-defeating thoughts or the displaced pain in our world. Instead, we can embrace the imperfection.

Review

"Courage, compassion, and connection: Through Brené's research, observations, and guidance, these three little words can open the door to amazing change in your life." Ali Edwards, author of Life Artist

Review

"Brené Brown courageously tackles the dark emotions that get in the way of leading a fuller life; read this book and let some of that courage rub off on you." Daniel H. Pink, New York Times best-selling author of A Whole New Mind

Review

"This important book is about the lifelong journey from 'What will people think?' to 'I am enough.' Brown's unique ability to blend original research with honest storytelling makes reading The Gifts of Imperfection like having a long, uplifting conversation with a very wise friend who offers compassion, wisdom, and great advice." Harriet Lerner, New York Times best-selling author of The Dance of Anger and The Dance of Connection

This book was a great disappointment. Why? The title led me to believe it would say something like "Don't waste your time striving for perfection, instead, strive for excellence - doing your best." However, what the book spoke of was the author herself, her Blogs, and her speeches. All in all I thought it was a waste of time.

I have studied this Author before (THANK YOU IPSI for all the great reads!) and she really has a wonderful, accepting, and even calming way of talking about the things nobody really wants to talk about. Guilt, Shame, Fear, Anger...... Her books are powerful and inspirational.

Life-changing for me. One of the reviews described it as a long conversation with one of your most personal friends, and I couldn't say it better. Brown has insight into topics of shame and imperfection, that when discussed in a healthy manner, can lead to a much deeper inner peace.

A friend gave this to me last Christmas and I thought, "Soooo, what are ya tryin' to say?" I was so put off by the title that I couldn't make the time to read it until a month ago. But once I did, it was like taking a spa trip for my spirit after it's been depleted by life's treadmill. The author teaches the components of "Wholehearted (compassionate and authentic)Living" as guideposts she's discovered through extensive client interviews. Although the author has a doctorate, her use of language is easy to understand and accessible. Her personal stories about struggles with perfectionism, shame, and vulnerability encourage even the most entrenched perfectionist that we can let go of our unworthiness baggage and experience joy just as we are right now.
