I was assigned to read this novel for a graduate course, but its story kept me turning pages. The romance, the intrigue, the mysteries and racial tensions and ideological debates, deeply felt, kept me ploughing through difficult Creole dialects and other bits of antiquity. A compelling novel about a way of a life two hundred years old, but not so old after all.
