Synopsis
Excerpt from The Hidden Gem: Drama in Two Acts; Composed for the College Jubilee of St. Cuthbert's, Ushaw, 1858
Yet the difficulty which the historian attributes to the Athenian orator, is eminently and unaffectedly that of one who addresses himself to such a task. Hard is it to praise where the language Of eulogy must needs be felt by some to be in arrear Of their forward sympathies, by others in advance of their tardy judgments. SO he who writes at once for the chivalrous sons Of Ushaw, and for the colder hearted critics of the world at large, finds it hard, indeed, to devise a form of phrase so nicely adjusted as to meet the expectations of readers so variously disposed, and to be chargeable neither by the one class with the error of defect, nor by the other with that of exaggeration. The only solution of the prob lem which occurs to the mind of the present writer, is to aim, as far as possible, at producing a narrative of facts, so simple as to risk the imputation rather of crudeness than Of hyperbole, yet so faithful as to be open to no material correction from those who are qualified to pronounce upon it.
