Synopses & Reviews
The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, which tells of the seduction of the shepherd Anchises by the love-goddess Aphrodite, has long been recognized as a masterpiece of early Western literature. This edition is designed as a reference tool to aid scholars and students in their study of the poem. The introduction and commentary deal with points of language appropriate to the specialist or student of Greek, but also with matters of literary interpretation of interest to the non-specialist reader.
Review
"The monograph by A. Faulkner anthem Homeric Aphrodite...is the work certainly welcome in view of studies of epic and archaic Greek literature in general. The book -- a deeply revised and expanded version of the thesis D. Phil. authority -- has the merit of filling a major gap in the history of studies of the Homeric hymn, which had never been subject to continuous comment and complete.... The edition is well done and from now on we will refer to it for any discussion of the hymn, the comment is not only a good 'reference work' for those who want to approach for the first time to the study of the poem, but also an interlocutor for those who intend to confront challenging issues still have a long meditation."--Laura Carrara, Bryn Mawr Classical Reviews
