Synopses & Reviews
Golf is a game that lends itself to enduring friendships, but the remarkable friendship between PGA Tour legend Arnold Palmer and his well-known dentist and photographer, Dr. Howdy Giles, is perhaps one for the ages. It began nearly 50 years ago when Giles, fresh from dental school and a new recruit to Arnie's Army, snapped a simple photograph of his hero passing in a parade. From that brief and rather ordinary encounter grew a remarkable friendship between an American legend and his most ardent fan. Since that time, Giles has conservatively snapped more than one quarter of a million photographs of his pal Arnold Palmer at every stage of his public career and private life--creating an intimate and revealing personal photographic history of the most charismatic figures in the history of the game. Fans will revel in both the pictures and Howdy's intimate descriptions of the people and events he captured with his camera in more than four decades of close friendship with Arnold Palmer. To be published on the eve of Palmer's 80th birthday, The King and I features a foreword by the King himself and a comprehensive introduction by James Dodson, the award-winning golf writer and collaborator with Palmer on his New York Times best-selling memoirs, A Golfer's Life. The book also includes entertaining commentaries from Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, former President George H.W. Bush, Gov. Tom Ridge, and a host of colorful former and current PGA Tour stars.
