Synopses & Reviews
China is the most interesting transition economy in the world today. The objective of the proposed book is to provide a most recent account of what is presently going on in the Chinese economy and the type of economy from which China is transitioning. The topics addressed in this book will increase the reader’s awareness of the institutional and cultural forces that shape the dynamism of the Chinese economy today and will continue to do so for the years to come.
Some of the questions that this book will address are: How did the Chinese economy evolve into what it is today? How does the Chinese economy affect the developing and industrialized countries and why should the present state of the Chinese economy be of any interest or concern to the rest of the world? How is the Chinese banking sector evolving and what role do private banks play in this change? What was the quantitative impact of the 1999 higher education reform on the consumption and saving patterns of China’s population? How does the social network in rural China influence economic activity and financial flows? What accounts for consumption inequalities among China’s population? What processes are responsible for the current distribution of income in Chinese cities and how do government agencies manage to maintain equality of public services given the increasing inflow of population to the cities? How is the recent economic crisis of industrialized countries expected to affect China’s economic stability and long term growth? How are the policy makers in China dealing with international and domestic economic challenges?
