Synopsis
Excerpt from The Place-Names of Nottinghamshire: Their Origin and Development
This present work on the place-names of Nottinghamshire was. Originally written as a thesis in the School of English Language and Philology of the University of Liverpool. The subject was suggested to me by Professor H. C. Wyld, to whose teaching and kind assistance I owe much.
The field of place-name research is a distinctly dangerous one, and it was only after long hesitation that I decided to lay this study before the public. At one time I was quite prepared to suppress the work entirely, although much time and energy had been spent on its composition. If now given to the world it is because I have been persuaded that its perusal may afford pleasure and instruction to some, and that the theories - often very bold - propounded in the book may draw valuable com ments from its critics. It is also hoped that it will stimulate research in a much neglected province of Germanic philology.
