Synopsis
Excerpt from The Progressive Road to Reading
It is to be remembered that before a child can express what he has heard, he must have command of the necessary words. Some children at the age of six have a vocabulary which enables them to reproduce in their own way any simple story; others at the same age seem to have almost no vocabulary. These children will not be able to reproduce at all; they will have to acquire a vocabulary, before any reproduction is required. The reading will teach new words, and the daily story telling will give facility in using them.
