Some race to win. Others race to survive.

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.

Some riders live.

Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition - the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

As she did in her bestselling Shiver trilogy, author Maggie Stiefvater takes us to the breaking point, where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive. The Scorpio Races is an unforgettable reading experience.

Review

Maggie Stiefvater weaves a beautiful tale, enticing you to turn the next page, pulling you in and leaving you hoping for a sequel! You don't want the characters, your new friends, to leave you while wishing you could move to, or at least visit, this fascinating place.

The story was gripping from the first page. Maggie Stiefvater transports you to an island that seems familiar--except for the bloodthirsty water horses that threaten everything in their path--and the annual races that take place to show each rider's prowess at harnessing these deadly creatures. By slyly slipping in a love story with two equally compelling characters, it was one of the few books I've read in which I truly had no idea how it was going to end.

I loved this story. Mystical sea horses, a little bit of action, and a little bit of love. This novel is one of Maggie Stiefvater's best kept secrets.

The Scorpio Races is broadly about life on an island somewhere maybe north of Ireland. The island is famous for the faery horses that come ashore every year, and which, if you're clever enough to catch one, make for some of the fastest racehorses in the world. Unfortunately these creatures resemble horses in looks more than temperament: they're bloodthirsty, and will kill you if they can. The book's title, then, refers to the dangerous race the island hosts every November, a race in which the winner is not always the jockey on the fastest horse, but the horse and rider who are alive enough, by the end, to cross the finish line. But this story is about a lot more than killer sea horses on a remote island. It's about fighting for what you love, even when everyone says that's a pretty stupid thing to do. It's about having a home where you belong, even when that home changes irrevocably. It's about family, and friendship, and what it means to be brave. It's about the dozens of losses and sadnesses we suffer every day, and trying to do the right thing in spite of all that. The Scorpio Races has its funny moments, and moments that made me smile happily, but it's not a happy book. For me, though, that's another reason why it feels so real. Stiefvater has created an island where monsters disguised as horses wash up on the beach, and with it, she tells me a story about life.

I thought this book was probably the best YA novel that came out in the last year. Maggie Stiefvater is an amazing author and she does so well with the Irish legends, making them into stories that fit the modern times. I just simply loved the characters and the whole setting of this book. It was something different that had not been done before and I am always eager to see fresh books enter the writing community, especially in the YA genre. Five stars!

When I attended a panel at a book convention and heard Maggie Stiefvater’s book being summarized as a story about “homicidal horses,” I was sold. The Scorpio Races centers around mythical horses called the capaill uisce, which emerge from the sea every November, and during this time, riders capture and train these horses--all while trying to not be disemboweled by their mounts. These Celtic legends attempt to lure their victims into the sea or merely shred them to pieces. However, the author presents this as magical realism--subtle and as an organic part of the setting. So for any fantasy skeptics, this book reads like a Misty of Chincoteague or the Black Stallion with higher stakes. Now, this story is told from alternating perspectives of Puck and Sean. Normally within post-modern YA novels, I find first person narrative repulsive--it’s like being forced to endure a conversation with a self-absorbed, insipid imitation of a teenager. However, I found myself endeared to the horses, the characters, and the island. I watched as Puck and Sean, without that instant-love rainbow connection, form a relationship born out of a mutual love of the island, which is sweet and suits the characters. Lastly, I loved the luscious atmosphere and lyricism. Without bordering on purple prose, the coastal fog just rolls of the page as the author describes all the shades of twilight. Every page brims with life. With vivid descriptions like "a fearful dull Pegasus with disintegrating wings of sea foam" or the simple yet effective repetition of "I am so, so alive" the author constructs sentences that make me envy her talent. This book receives 5 out of 5 stars.

As a big fan of her "Shiver" series, I was looking forward to this book. It turned out to be just as compelling a read as that series, if not even better!

Yes, yes, yes. I wasn't a huge fan of Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls series (Shiver et al.), so I didn't really expect much from this - but I LOVED it. It's moody and weird and bewitching, like nothing else I've ever read. The story seems to exist outside of time and space (I had no clue what time period it was set in, until a character mentioned "women's suffrage" towards the end of the book, and the setting is a small island I assume to be located off Scotland? or maybe Ireland? since the story incorporates creatures from Celtic mythology). The narration switches back and forth between the two main characters: Puck, a feisty, fearless girl who was orphaned by the water horses, and Sean, the quiet, mysterious four-time winner of the Scorpio Races. Puck becomes the first girl to enter the annual race, which she does to save her home, and this is how she and Sean cross paths. Sean is in the race because he's always in the race, and he needs to win so he can buy his beloved water horse, Corr, from his wealthy employer. So they enter the race, they train for the race, they race. Throw in lots of family drama, some first-wave feminism, a wee bit of romance, and a good dose of death and dismemberment, and that's that. Really this book isn't very supernatural at all, except that the horses in the race happen to crave human flesh and come from the sea (!). Other than that, it's a pretty straightforward coming-of-age tale. I love the characters, I love the writing, I love the horses, I love the totally believable romance - but most of all, I think, I love the heartbreak of it all. It's hard to explain, really. I think some Shiver fans will hate this, because it's much more quiet and subtle, but I found it to be totally enchanting.

This book is amazing. I love how the author showcases all of the character's feelings, and the writing is beautiful. I love all things fantastical, but this story of the mythical water horses really striking.Only after I started it, i realized that I had actually seen the author speak in October at Wordstock!I couldn't put it down, and now my friends are lining up to borrow it from me! Definitely five stars.

Scorpio Races is the newest release from acclaimed author Maggie Steifvater, author of the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The rich detail and passionate characters that Maggie brought to her wolves crosses into this latest release that asks is the question " how far would you go for what you love?" In Thisby the tides are turning and with the coming of November brings in the entry of the capaill uisce, a fearsome type of man eating water horse. The Scorpio Race itself has been a time honored tradition for the men of the island, and with the coming of the capaill uisce begins the beginning of the bloodletting. The savage water horses eat their way through island and rider as they yearn for the sea and the men and boys yearn for the title of winner for the races of the year. With dangerous training and jockeying for places the riders have someone new in their midst, a girl named Puck with a home to save. Scorpio Races brings in amazing characters who are looking for a future with their small island while all feeling the call or the chains of the sea. SR is breathtaking to read, I ate up the pages and could not put it down. It's story enthralled me as a reader. It was just incredible. Growing up is hard enough but our characters have this huge responsibility to save themselves, their home, their family, their way of life. The world building was spectacular, you could almost feel the pull of the sea in it's pages. Maggie S has created a masterpiece of possibilities in the Scorpio Races.

This is a wonderfully engrossing read, utterly enthralling from beginning to end. The lyrical, magical prose of Stiefvater's writing is pitch-perfect to the inner ear. The characters are compelling, and the overall dark tones of this epic story of hardship, loss, and survival are shot through with light--courage, loyalty, and love. This one belongs on the keeper shelf.
