Synopses & Reviews
Teri Woods' book,
True to the Game has been quoted as one of the best street stories ever read. Pinned as the female version of Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim,
True is the hottest erban novel to date and it is knocking every book off shelves as it moves to the top of best-seller lists and into the hands of motion picture moguls.
True to the Games is the story of Gena and Quadir, a couple caught in the seductive lure of drugs and money. And thought the book was written in the late eighties and focuses on the streets of Philadelphia, her book is a current reality of inner city neighborhoods across the country. "I have lived in West Philadelphia most of my life and as a teenager and young woman, experiencing an excessive loss of loved ones that fell victim the the streets is what inspired me to write True."
Written over a period of six years, Woods began writing True in 1993 while she worked as a legal secretary at a law firm and juggled motherhood to her now 14 year old daughter. After the book's completion, her hopes of immediately getting a publisher did not happen. So, the book sat in her bedroom closet for two years until a friend convinced her to get it out there. It wasn't until 1998 that Teri's handmade books were made available to be sold. Woods started selling her book in beauty ships and on the sidewalks to Philadelphia to Harlem's 125th street in New York City where she began to sell her book out of the trunk of her car. "Selling my book on the street represents the hustle and what I'm prepared to do in order to have my story read."
No longer working as a legal secretary, Teri is busy completing her second novel, Method, and pushing her book True to the Game on a full time basis. Moving strictly in the streets up until April 2002, Woods has managed to sell over 100,000 books independently. "I just want people to feel my story, feel my characters, and I want credit for representing the streets, which is something no one has received in quite some time."
Teri Woods is "Hard work paying off." She has been featured in XXL, The Source and Vibe magazines. True has also linked a major motion picture deal with Cash Money Millionaires Films and Native Pictures. Native Pictures is the premiere independent urban film company started last year by James Ellis (manager mogul to Redman, Icarus and producer Rockwilder) and Shauna Garr (Paramount Pictures Executive).
True to the Game is a force to be reckoned with in urban entertainment. Woods' ability to go from a legal secretary and struggling single mom to having her book sold in several respected bookstore chains to inking a film deal is commendable. Watch out for True to the Game's screen debut in 2002 and more from Teri Woods.
