Synopsis
The German submarine was a scourge of Allied shipping as underwater war evolved in World War One and then reached is zenith in the early years of World War Two. In the latter conflict it became very close to a war-winning weapon for the Kriegsmarine. In these wars one thousand German U-boats were destroyed by air and seaborne attacks, by surface vessels and Allied submarines, in tough head-to-head encounters, chance meetings and after extensive chases and hunts. This book provides unprecedented detail of the sinkings at sea to provide the historian with a single source reference to both World Wars. Such was the impact of the submarine fleet of the German Navy that the study of the means by which the threat was physically removed has become an integral part of understanding sea warfare of the twentieth century. This volume, providing maximum information after many years of extensive research, shows what action brought the end of each vessel and adds information on the submarine, its commander, location, survivors and casualties plus other background information.
