Synopses & Reviews
Ultimate Horse Care Editor John McEwen BVet MED MRCVS, a specialist equine veterinarian and consultant to the British showjumping and dressage teams, has recruited a unique team of veterinary surgeons and other experts to write the definitive book on horse care. Ultimate Horse Care is not a conventional veterinary textbook, nor is it just another book about looking after horses. For the first time, specialists use their own experience and background to give a complete understanding of how the horse is put to together, how its mind works, the diseases and conditions it may suffer from, and the stresses imposed by its lifestyle. This is of far-reaching significance for all those involved in the horse world, as it is only through achieving this level of understanding that we can give the care and treatment that is specifically required. Whether you are preparing a top-class competitor to face a major challenge, or whether you are caring for the faithful all-rounder who has given years of loyal service, you want the very best for your horse. Ultimate Horse Care will give just that. Starting with the horse's origins, and analyzing its physiological and psychological make-up, there is detailed information on what constitutes a healthy horse. Then each expert writes on his or her own specialist area, combining invaluable information on injury and disease, with practical advice on diagnosis, tips on treatment, as well as everyday care of the horse. The major systems are all investigated in detail, with special sections on Feeding and Nutrition relating to the digestive system, and The Horse's World, which examines the nervous system and behavioral problems caused by malfunctions and stress. The practical approach comes to the forefront with The Horse In Work, which looks at the basic requirements of tack and the importance of tack-fitting. For the more ambitious, there is comprehensive coverage of The Competition Horse, examining fitness routines and specific stress and injury problems that may be encountered. The Next Generation looks at the subject of breeding and reproduction, followed by a fascinating insight into Alternative Approaches, examining the benefits of the newest forms of treatment ranging from acupuncture and aromatherapy to chiropractic, osteopathy, and massage. The book concludes with a comprehensive reference section detailing colors, markings, conformation, assessing age from teeth, and vetting horses before purchase. Lavishly illustrated with over 500 photographs, Ultimate Horse Care is a must for every horse owner in the 21st century.
