One fine day, a fox drinks the milk from an old woman's pail, and the woman is so angry she chops his tail off! She'll only agree to sew it back on if the fox will give her back her milk. The hapless fox begs a cow for some milk, but the cow will only give it to him, if he'll bring her some grass. A field will give the fox some grass, if only he will bring the field some water. And a stream will give the fox water, if only he'll bring the stream a jug! The fox's quest leads him on and on until, finally, a kind miller takes pity on the fox, and the story ends happily after all.
Nonny Hogrogian's humorous tale won the Caldecott Medal for 1971 and has become a well-loved classic.y
