Synopsis
Rationale
Virtual Clinical Excursions is a workbook/online package that guides the student through Pacific View Regional Hospital, a virtual hospital that was created to offer a hands-on experience. The student is actively engaged with the workbook activities, virtual hospital, and textbook throughout each lesson. Each lesson has a core textbook reading assignment from Potter: Fundamentals of Nursing, 9e and activities based on "visiting" the patients in the hospital. The lessons in the workbook complement the content in the textbook and provide a perfect environment in which students can "practice" what they are learning in the text.
Virtual Clinical Excursions was designed to help students get acclimated to the routine and rigors of the average clinical rotation. By immersing them within a realistic yet safe nursing environment, VCE allows the student to learn about the complexities of patient care while preparing them to make decisions as conditions change. VCE contains multiple information sources (such as an Electronic Patient Record, KARDEX, Medication Administration Record, and a Drug Guide) that can be examined and evaluated to understand how and why care is implemented in various clinical scenarios. It also presents significant real-world problems that put the student in nursing situations where they can set priorities for care, collect data, analyze and interpret data, prepare and administer medications, and reach conclusions about complex problems.
Students are guided to interact with the patients to learn such skills as communication, documentation, assessment, critical thinking, and clinical judgment. The workbook is the driver instructing the student how to interact within the virtual realm of Pacific View Regional Hospital. It will send the student into the virtual hospital setting to collect information, make decisions, and set priorities. The learner will use information from Fundamentals of Nursing, 9e and and apply the knowledge through a guided workbook and virtual hospital learning experience.
