Northwest author Craig Lesley's debut novel (1984) is a poignant, understated book about fathers and sons, hunting, the past the present, and the lives of Native Americans living in the 20th century. It really tells two stories, that of a rodeo rider who reconnects with his son on a road trip and the rodeo rider's recollection of his dead father. As someone who's never hunted and probably never will, I got a little bored with the hunting scenes, but could appreciate their inclusion. PDX residents will enjoy the Mary's Club cameo. You might also like Sherman Alexie's books.

Craig Lesley has given us a great gift in Winterkill. Having read the book when it first came out thirty years ago, I was pleased to be quickly drawn into this story of sons and fathers once again. Most memorable are scenes documenting the passage of traditions - watching the reservoir rise behind Bonneville Dam to swallow Celilo Falls where natives once thrived from salmon fishing, feeling the cold of icy waters in which horses and herds of elk have been forever frozen in time, held powerless by the vastness of a landscape in which spirit wolves wander. The weyakin hovers over the multiple stories that feed into the whole of this gem of a book, reminding us that our deeds have consequences, our lives are not singular.

This is a great story about a Indian living in Eastern Oregon whose ex dies. He has to get his son and bring him home. He tries to teach him the Indian stories and life while remembering his father teaching him the same. It is extremely well written and interesting.

This is a wonderful story that takes place mostly in eastern Oregon. A native American father and son reunite after the mother's death. The story encompasses the father's childhood with his own father, growing up in eastern Oregon, native American culture and western rodeo life. It also explores the changing native American way of life and a historical perspective of how that change came to be..
