Synopsis
Banta draws upon essays in Vanity Fair by noted journalists, literary figures, and cultural critics in order to examine the manner by which major cultural and historical events in the Untied States and Britain led to the invention of previously non-existent words to express the rampant changes within society.
About the Author
Martha Banta is a professor emeritus in the Department of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the author of six books, including Imaging American Women: Idea and Ideals in Cultural History; Taylored Lives: Narrative Productions in the Age of Taylor, Veblen, and Ford; Barbaric Intercourse: Caricature and the Culture of Conduct; and One True Theory and the Quest for an American Aesthetic. She is the past president of the American Studies Association, a former editor of the Publications for the Modern Language Association, and the recipient of both the Bode-Pearson Prize for Outstanding Contributions to American Studies (2002) from the ASA and the Jay B. Hubbell Award for Lifetime Achievement (2005) from MLA.
