Religion, Politik und Gesellschaft in den drei großen preußischen Städten in der Epoche nach der Reformation sind das Thema dieses Buches. Mit den Methoden der modernen Gesellschaftsgeschichte wird untersucht, wie der Prozeß der "Konfessionalisierung" in den politisch-sozialen und kulturellen Wandel der Stadtgesellschaften eingebunden war. Welche innerstädtischen Gegensätze sind in den Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Räten, Theologen und Bürgerschaften um den Bekenntnisstand ihrer Kirchen ausgetragen worden? Wie hat die Bekenntnis- und Kirchenpolitik der Städte deren Verhältnis zum polnisch-litauischen Unionsstaat abgebildet und verändert? Auf welchen Ebenen wurde wurde die territoriale, städtische und sprachlich-"nationale" Identität der preußischen Stadtbürger langfristig durch die Reformation beeinflußt?
Auf der Grundlage umfangreicher Archivstudien sowie unter systematischer Einbeziehung der reichen polnischen Forschungen über diese Epoche steuert diese regionale Fallstudie zum großen Komplex "Konfessionalisierung" und frühmoderne Gesellschaft neue Gesichtspunkte bei und bietet eine Neuinterprtation dieses Abschnitts der preußischen Landesgeschichte an: Jenseits von bisher mit nationalen Vorurteilen befrachteten Debatten werden die Spezifika der regionalen Entwicklung herausgearbeitet, die ebenso Geschichte des deutschen Ostens wie des polnischen Westens ist.
