How We Assembled Indiespensable #24

by The Panjandrums, February 22, 2011 5:07 PM
Author Hannah Pittard completely charmed us. Working with her on this Indiespensable installment was almost as enjoyable as reading her stunning debut, The Fates Will Find Their Way.

We're thrilled to present her work in a unique custom slipcase that is as beautiful as the book cover. And, it's high time that we lavish some praise on our own graphic designer, Lenore, who works with the book-jacket artists to create these works of art to complement each selection.

Megan, whose interview with Pittard you'll find on the enclosed author cards, was thoroughly enamored with the "melodic, purposeful prose" of the story.

But she wasn't the only one; it also received high praise from other authors:

[A] bold, wise, magical, and authentic novel about youthful infatuation and its legacy. Hannah Pittard's beautifully confident prose is sure to make readers look back on their own teenage years with fresh wonder.

— Vendela Vida, author of The Lovers

The Fates Will Find Their Way is simply tremendous — a beautiful, roving, restless and relentless exploration of a crime. It would be almost too sad to bear the implications of this story if it weren't for the warmth, hope, and kindness of its haunting prose.

— Patrick Somerville, author of The Cradle

We could go on gushing for the rest of this letter, but then you might not learn about the other fun stuff we packed in the box! Our thanks go to Ecco for providing advance reader copies of the wonderful Ten Thousand Saints, by debut novelist Eleanor Henderson, to be released in June 2011. Ecco summarizes the book as a "sweeping, multigenerational drama, set against the backdrop of the raw, roaring New York City of the late '80s — part coming of age, part coming to terms, it joins the ranks of The Emperor's Children and The Fortress of Solitude." We love this book, and we're excited to share it so far in advance of its publication date.

Finally, we wanted to be sure and outfit you with the latest Powell's mug design, hot off the press. With it, we continue to demonstrate Oregon pride — who knew the state bird is the Western Meadowlark? Or that the state drink is milk? Well, our design team, surely; they not only create great merchandise, they also know a heck of a lot about the state we call home.

We like to think of this installment as the literary version of comfort food. Two books, a charming interview, and a handsome vessel for all of your most comforting drinks — milk or otherwise — to keep you happily sated for hours.
