Something Borrowed

Talk about drama, laughter, and a few tears! Emily has created characters that are relate-able and makes you realize that real life can be accurately depicted in a book of fiction! It was the prefect book to take along with me on my commute ride and how quickly it went... I can't wait to see what happens to Darcy in the next installment!

I delved into my first Stephen King with gusto. It's not often that a book captures my attention in the FIRST PAGE! While the length is intimidating, the speed at which you go through the book will have you wondering if it really was only 400 pages. The twists and turns as well as the depth of character development is well placed. Characters are developed so you feel they could be someone you meet on the street. King really brings to life a time lost to history. I can't wait to reread this book and see what I missed the first time around!

Sarahs Key
by
Tatiana de Rosnay
chawkey
, January 19, 2012
A heartbreaking look into the part the French played in the Holocaust. So many families devastated by the round up and eventual trip to the German run concentration/work camps. And the blase-ness of the French not caring/wanting to know their part in WWII makes you feel the pain of Julia as she delves into the history of the apartment she is moving into and it's part in the Vel' d'Hiv. Tatiana de Rosnay has created a very believable story that makes you want to know how it ends. I would highly recommend the book over the movie. The pain and suffering of little Sarah is so well captured in the pages that the screen version just cannot compare.

Hangmans Daughter

A fabulous tale about a true family. Oliver Potzsch has turned a notorious family into a hero. Midevil times where witchcraft is akin to satanism, cause for burning at the stake and where the hangman tortures those in jail for the "truth" to come out. I could hardly put this down! The story comes to life and the details take you there. Historical and based on facts. Great, marvelous story!

Hangmans Daughter
by
Oliver Potzsch

, May 18, 2011
A fantastic fictional look at life in Bavaria during the 1600s. I was drawn into the mystery and the life restrictions of a hangman and his family. Potzsch relays feelings and situations very well and I could almost feel the regret of Kuisl during some of the scenes where he knew the innocence of the latest branded witch. The portrayal of everyday life for a hangman's family is superb and the illustration of what a hangman's tools are is brilliant. The deceptions and knowledge of otherwise innocuous characters are lighted upon at the end and even for the most discerning of readers, I believe a surprise or two will await you.

Mockingjay: Hunger Games 3
by
Collins, Suzanne
chawkey
, May 18, 2011
Heartbreaking and troubling, the last installment to this trilogy has a broken Katniss struggling to come to grips with what has happened before and during her second Hunger Games trial. She's lost so many and yet maintains her own self. I'm glad to see a book where good triumphs, but where real life scenarios are still felt by the main characters. As you feel that Katniss' will must break at some point with her pain of loss so forward in her mind, you see her struggle to overcome the pain to survive for her cause. Good does triumph, but it's not a victorious, fireworks display of triumph. Pain and loss overshadow the relief of a new beginning, but life does go on, rebuilds itself, and gives hope...

Catching Fire: Hunger Games #2
by
Suzanne Collins
chawkey
, May 18, 2011
A strong sequel to an amazing book! I could feel the anguish and frustration of Katniss upon the "victorious return" to District 12 and what life awaited her there. As she and Peeta go through the motions of visiting the other districts where with horror and pain they realize the uprising is real and that people are dying because of it. A few twists and turns that make you keep turning the pages. I could hardly put it down until the last page!

Fireflies In December
by
Jennifer Valent
chawkey
, April 25, 2011
A coming of age story that will grip all readers and tug at your emotions, especially in a society where bullying has become prevalent. Jessilyn sees people for who they are, regardless of “color." This story really drags the reader into what life was like during the heyday of the Klan and what people felt. I recommend this book to all readers, especially teens for a look at historical contexts and what friendship means. No holds barred, Valent describes good and bad times during the 1930s and how people eventually do come around, you just gotta hold onto your guns and stand up for what you feel is right without letting someone bully you into their line of thinking.

Hunger Games 01
by
Suzanne Collins
chawkey
, April 19, 2011
I was a bit skeptical at first, but once I got started, I couldn’t put it down! The trials Katniss has gone through to ensure her family’s survival is breathtaking and inspiring. The intensity of the Hunger Games and the post-apoctolyptic Panem is gripping. Collins’ descriptions are well thought out without becoming overly detailed and boring. I felt even the minor characters were well written and defined without having any detractions from the main characters. The hurt and anguish felt by Katniss and Peeta are felt as well as their joys. Highly recommended, but consideration should be made towards younger readers due to the violence of the situations. Can’t wait to continue on with the next books in this series!!!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot

I continually am amazed at how far tissue/cell culture has come since the 1950s. Well written, it draws in the reader and captures their attention. It reads like a story, not a history lesson. I get fired up reading parts about lack of consent and doctors that abused their privileges, but then am drawn into sorrow for a family that can’t afford health care… Highly suggested for any reader"especially anyone going into science. A must!!!

Healing The Child Warrior A Search For I
by
Richard Peterson
chawkey
, March 29, 2011
A story not to be forgotten… This book captures what it was really like for the men captured in WWII. A story many POWs will never tell. The heartbreaking reality is described in wrenching detail and pulls you into the Stalag. No detail is left unsaid; no poshness was added to lighten the feelings of desperation each man felt. A true picture of a Stalag where the Red Cross had no idea how many American men were there. Trading with the French for cigarettes. Sharing old, holey blankets in bunks filled with lice, 3 men to a bunk to share warmth. The situations that "Hart's War" took so casually and lightly.

Eat Pray Love One Womans Search for Everything Across Italy India & Indonesia
by
Elizabeth Gilbert

, February 09, 2011
I had a very hard time reading this book. I got frustrated with Gilbert’s “panic attacks” and whiney nature. Prior to Italy the worse whining ever, but once she got to India and her ashram, the whining decreased… Her characters are unbelievable and unrelatable. It’s hard to feel her point and become either sympathetic or involved with her. I would recommend this book if you are flying across country and need a distraction during your travels.

Son of a Witch

Son of a Witch was not quite as good as Wicked, but the story does pick up and delve more into Liir and what happens after Elphaba dies. I enjoyed reading Liir’s story, but wish there had been more resolution with Nor and her family… Good book, great to read while travelling or just sitting at home on a cold winter’s day. I recommend for all readers.

Wicked The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
by
Gregory Maguire

, January 18, 2011
Even though this is an older book, I reread it this year and it's always good! The twist on Wizard of Oz is fantastic! I really am more sympathetic to the Witch and her story. Maguire does well with these twists on the originals. My favorite by far is Wicked. I recommend for any young adult, though younger readers should be monitored due to some adult content.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic
by
Sophie Kinsella
chawkey
, January 14, 2011
Confessions is a great read! though, it really makes one wonder just how much of a facade the average person has, especially as they try to fit a budget into their lives. Becky finds this out as she tries a spending diary. All aspects of the book are very "real world" and most readers will find themselves in some situation similar to Kinsella's story. Mostly funny and sometimes you have to shake your head at the antics of Becky. A great read for young adults and up. A story most will relate to!

Endless Knot
by
Stephen R Lawhead
chawkey
, January 13, 2011
The end of the banfaith's prophecy is near. Llew marries. Cynan marries. Someone is betrayed. Llew and Cynan with Tegid and the Ravens follow the trail of the missing brides. Nettles returns with dire warnings and bad news. The Manifest world has crossed into the Albion world with dire consequences. The culmination of the series Song of Albion is well done and a thankful return to Llew's voice. The book ends strong and has a faint Christian tone to it, but this does not detract from the well written and eloquent design of the book. A complete circle is achieved once the reader has finished the last line of this book which is the first line of the first book. Well done and highly recommended--the entire series!

Silver Hand Song of Albion 2

A strong book--especially where the middle book is only so so. The change from Llew's voice to Tegid's threw me off for a few chapters, but the overall journey of the book was well done and engaging. The series is wonderful and definitely forms the good vs evil dynamic exceptionally well.

Paradise War 01 Song Of Albion
by
Steve Lawhead
chawkey
, January 10, 2011
An easy book to delve into. The concept of a manifest world and an Otherworld, each dependent on the other draws the reader in, especially as Lewis has a hard time grasping the concept. Fairy tales come to life at the beginning as Lewis and Simon head north to investigate an anomaly of an ancient scale. Good for any reader, regardless of religious background, as this delights a classic good vs evil story. Celtic symbolism is rampant throughout and a chapter to aid the reader in pronouncing the ancient words is helpful. Each of the books tie into the next very well. Smoothly written and details attended to well. Highly recommend for anyone!

A riveting story of a girl who defied the odds and survived the Red Army and Nazis after the invasion of Poland. Her affair with a German Officer to help protect and feed Jews hiding within the Officer's home and her way of hiding food and getting food into the Ghettos is inspiring. Her salvation of humanity is a boon to any wayward soul!

Funny at times and poignant, a story of survival being a non-circumcised Jew in Europe during the Nazi invasion. Making friends with Nazis and helping out fellow Jews, Ernest's survival takes on many facets. A good depiction of life during the German Occupation.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

This book was very hard to get into. The first 50+ pages (prior to the girl being introduced) was hard to follow with the names, locations, and events all running together. I felt like I needed a flow chart to keep track of who was who and doing what. Once past the initial phase, the book became much more interesting and easier to follow. Slog on thru and be rewarded!
