Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
by
Jacobs, Harriet

I felt compelled to keep reading chapter after chapter because I wanted to know what happened next and how she eventually managed to escape. Some parts of the book, while no one should be forced to undergo treatment like that, I felt they were quite mild compared to what they could have been. Other parts of the book were surreal, how could anyone possibly endure that? Definitely a book everyone should be exposed to.

Liar Temptress Soldier Spy Four Women Who Changed the Course of the Civil War
by
Karen Abbott
Kacey
, February 01, 2015
Why is this information not actively taught in high schools?! Abbott's research and knowledge about each character was astounding. I liked that Abbott chose to write about two Union women and two Confederate women; although I admittedly had a hard time reading about the two Confederates. It just made me so angry! All these dumb Union soldiers/generals getting completely deceived by these two ladies. We could have lost the war! Sometimes I had to put the book down and focus on other things to get rid of my frustrations haha. I loved when Abbott added information relating to how they treated diseases during that time. Thank goodness medicine has advanced since then! I wish more historical pictures had been added as those were especially interesting.

I'd been wanting to read this book ever since I first saw it in the bookstore. I was not disappointed! The story hooked me early on with the mysterious death of the main character's grandfather. The plot is quite creative and the villains are thoroughly creepy. The added touch of the antique photos really adds a new dimension, like a picture book for adults. Loved this book, can't wait to get my hands on the second one!

Bane Chronicles
by
Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson
Kacey
, January 04, 2015
If you enjoyed reading The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, you will of course love this book. Each chapter in The Bane Chronicles is a different story from sometime in Bane's life. The only thing connecting all the stories is the fact that Bane was in them. Some of the stories are adventurous and funny, some are exciting and happy, and some are sad. To be honest, I liked about half of the stories. Liking only about 50% of something usually isn't good, but let me tell you, there were two chapters that I just loved. Not just liked or enjoyed reading, I mean really loved. They made it feel like fireworks were going off around my heart. Worth reading the whole book just for those few chapters.

Forever Odd: Odd Thomas 2
by
Dean Koontz
Kacey
, January 04, 2015
Dean Koontz came up with the craziest characters for this novel. Usually novels have one crazy/random character and that's fine. Koontz looks at that and says, "Nah man. Imma make em all crazy." Forever Odd is a page turner from the get go. The action starts almost immediately and never lets up. Add that to all the crazy characters you meet along the way and this book ends up being pretty freakin' awesome. I cannot WAIT to read the next one!

Odd Thomas: Odd Thomas 1
by
Dean Koontz
Kacey
, January 04, 2015
I think this is the first time ever I've liked the movie better than the book. I did watch the movie first and I absolutely fell in love with it, so that might have something to do with it. Doesn't matter if it's the book or movie, the story is just fantastic! As usual the book allows you to become more intimate with the characters, learn more of their backstories, etc. I rather liked the life-is-perfect Stormy from the movie than the Stormy from the book that made my heart sad. Still, Odd Thomas is an great story and I cannot wait to read what Odd does next!

Fallen (Fallen, #1)
by
Lauren Kate

, November 13, 2014
Fallen is a fun young adult novel I thouraghly enjoyed reading. In this romantic mystery Luce transfers to the strict reform school: the Sword and Cross. No cars, No cell phones, bars on the window and mold on the walls, it might possibly be the worst place to go for your senior year. Until she catches a glance of Daniel. Like a moth to a flame in the darkness, Luce is irresistibly drawn to him. However, Daniel wants absolutely nothing to do with her. Many of her new classmates talk to Luce like they already know her and they hint at a hidden history. What is going on?! You'll have to read to find out!

Tessa is engaged to Jem! Wonderful, sweet Jem- who is dying. Will just found out he's not cursed and can love Tessa without hurting her. His revelation comes too late. Will could never take her from Jem. The Magister, however, is determined to do just that. And he has a giant unstoppable clockwork army. The London Institute is in a desperate fight for it's life. I don't want to say anymore, you just have to read it! It's so exciting! I cannot find the words to express how awesome it is! Read it!

Infernal Devices 01 Clockwork Angel
by
Clare, Cassandra
Kacey
, November 12, 2014
Clockwork Angel is the start to my all time favorite series: The Infernal Devices. It wasn't always that way. When Clockwork Angel first came out I was really into the original series, The Mortal Instruments. So when I started reading this book I was in distress! Where's Clary? Jace? All my beloved characters?! I kept reading and soon I became enthralled by the dirty London streets and the gorgeous Victorian dresses. The new main character Tessa, with her book smarts and quiet strength, resounded much more with me than Clary ever did. Seriously a MUST READ!

Since this is a trilogy, if you haven't read the first two, read no further! Spoilers! Evie's got things back under control, other than the fact that the fairy courts are fighting and the Dark Faerie Queen is conducting experiments on humans. Yup. Everything's under control... that is, until Raquel is ousted as the IPCA's director and a new woman takes over. This new director is not good news and doesn't take orders from teenagers. To make matters worse, all the paranormals are convinced Evie is going to save them, but she has no idea what they're talking about. Save them how? And from what? When will Evie ever have time to watch Easton Heights? You'll have to read to find out!

Evie finally gets to live out her Easton Heights dreams: going to high school, having a boyfriend, and NOT working for the secret government agency IPCA. As it turns out, living a normal life can be awfully boring. Easton Heights made it look so exciting! To spice up her life, Evie decides to take on some assignments from the IPCA. Follow Evie on her continued adventure as she learns more about her own past and travels deep into the fairy lands. Just as fun as the original! Definitely recommend!

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
by
Mary Roach
Kacey

In my opinion, this is Mary Roach's best book. Since death and dead bodies are kind of taboo I had never really given much thought to corpses and what to do with them. I figured you could either be cremated, buried, or donated to science. Little did I really know! In Stiff, Mary Roach respectfully and cleverly introduces readers to a whole new world of the post mortem. I found it fascinating and often quite funny. Definitely recommend!

Sold
by
Patricia Mccormick
Kacey
, November 09, 2014
This tiny book is incredibly powerful... and should probably only be read by mature teens and adults. Sold is colorfully told through the eyes of Lakshima, a thirteen year old Nepalese girl. Lakshima is told by her stepfather that she is going to earn money in the city to help her family, but unknown to Lakshima, he sells her into prostitution. It's sobering to realize that this happens to young girls everyday, innocent sweet girls like Lakshima. Sold is heart-wrenching and eye-opening. After reading it, you'll have a new appreciation for everything you have.

Poisonwood Bible
by
Barbara Kingsolver

, November 09, 2014
A must read for anyone wanting to do missionary work, join the Peace Corps, or do any type of humanitarian aid in another country. The Poisonwood Bible follows an authoritarian Christian priest who takes his wife and four daughters to do missionary work in the Congo. Barbara Kingsolver beautifully writes about the Congo. She richly describes the flora, the fauna, the history, the culture, the oppressive heat- I felt like I truly visited the land. I don't want to give away any of the details, you just have to read it. Don't be intimidated by the size of the book. The story sucks you in almost instantaneously and before you know it, you've turned the last page.

Another spectacular insight on what it's like to have Aspergers, straight from the horses mouth. Working in K-12 education, I really appreciated Daniel Tammet's comments on his childhood: from the struggles of his parents to his odd collecting phase. The latter half of the book detailed the numerous jaw-dropping feats he has been able to accomplish, and how he managed to do it. Truly amazing. I definitely recommend this book. It's a fascinating look into a truly extraordinary mind!

The legal troubles don't end there, Isabel's dad is trying to remove the wolves from the endangered species list so he and his friends can hunt them. Hunt the pack! Cole is still working on a cure and trying to get Isabel to forgive him for not sleeping with her. Can Sam protect the pack now that Beck is gone? What if a cure can't be found? , November 05, 2014
Haven't read Shiver? Don't read any further, spoilers ahead! What? A second book? But Grace cured Sam! They can live happily ever after! Right? Noooooo... what's wrong now?! Grace keeps getting sick and her parents forbid her to see Sam. This is of course, a teenagers worst nightmare; however Grace's illness doesn't seem altogether normal, which compounds the problem. Enter Cole, a new character to the Shiver series. Cole is one of the newest members turned by Beck and is a definite wild card. Regardless, Cole will soon play a pivotal role in Sam and Grace's lives. Linger furthers the story of Shiver and while introducing new characters, also brings new depth to old characters like Isabelle. Definitely recommend!

Things couldn't possibly be worse: Sebastian is alive and Jace is being controlled by him. It's not even as simple as "kill Sebastian and Jace gets set free". No. Of course not. They are bound together: hurt one boy, you hurt the other. Can Jace be saved? Should he be sacrificed for the good of the Clave and the good of the world? It's torturous to read Jace not being Jace, but you will have to read it to find out what happens!

Jace and Clary aren't brother and sister after all! Valentine AND Sebastian are both dead and the Clave is saved. So why, WHY would Cassandra Clare write another book where the peace everyone finally achieved gets thrown into the air. Well, you'll just have to read to find out. What we thought was over, might not be. Jace starts becoming distant. Clary begins to doubt Jace and stumbles onto another mystery she has to investigate. Simon keeps getting attacked by a weird cult. What is going on?! Very exciting! Definitely recommend!

Mortal Instruments 03 City Of Glass
by
Clare, Cassandra

, October 30, 2014
The Mortal Instruments was intended to be two trilogies, so this is the AMAZING conclusion to the original trilogy (and one of my favorite books from the entire series). Valentine is amassing an army in his quest to overthrow the clave. Clary's mother is still being quite unhelpful by remaining in a coma. The final clue to waking her might be in Alicante, the fabled home of the shadowhunters. Frustratingly, Jace doesn't want Clary to come to Alicante. What's going to happen? How will it all be resolved?? You'll have to read. Highly HIGHLY recommend-and not just to teenagers!

Caution: Book 1 spoilers ahead! If you were blown away by City of Bones, you MUST keep reading the series. City of Ashes picks up right where City of Bones left off: Jace and Clary are brother and sister. What a bombshell. Simon is eager to take advantage of this fact, but now that Clary's a shadowhunter she's often training at the institute, or trying to solve the mystery of her mom's coma, she doesn't have a lot of free time. As if Clary's life isn't in enough upheaval, Valentine makes another move. City of Ashes is full of twists, turns and surprises that will keep you enthralled from start to finish. Highly recommend!

This book is one of my favorites. Even after reading the entire series, I can still clearly picture the trouble Seth gets into in this book. The second installment of the Fablehaven introduces us to the Society of the Evening Star, which is an evil society whose sole purpose is to overthrow magical preserves and use them for their own nefarious purposes. Grandpa Sorenson calls in specialists to help protect the farm, but Kendra suspects one of them is a traitor! Oh, and if that wasn't exciting enough, a giant, unstoppable, ravenous frog is determined to eat Seth. Highly recommend!

I LOVED this series and proceeded to pass it along to adults and children alike. Akin to Harry Potter, Fablehaven involves a smart young girl named Kendra and her act first, think second little brother Seth. While visiting their Grandparents they discover a magical world that always existed but they could never see before. Suddenly Kendra and Seth must keep their wits about them as their lives become full of centaurs, fairies, unicorns, trolls, you name it! Book one involves Kendra and Seth being forced to bargain with a sneaky witch, who takes advantage of their ignorance to this new world. Can Kendra and Seth undo the damage they have caused? , October 26, 2014
I flipping LOVE this book. No matter where you go in the world, toilets are an integral part of the society. One of the most important phrases you learn when visiting another country is how to ask where the bathroom is, but do you know what that bathroom might look like? Squat? Longdrop? Chamber pot? Tree? This glorious book takes you on a photo journey of the toilets of the world. You'll be introduced to space toilets, female urinals, and even a toilet on the street surrounded by one-way glass! Could you go seeing everyone walking around the restroom even though you know they couldn't see you? Each photo has a brief explanation and location listed. Toilets of the World also contains a brief history of the toilet in the beginning, and then short explanations of each continent before the toilets of each section. Check it out and be amazed!

I really enjoyed that a lot of this book took place on the Sith world of Dromund Kaas. After reading the Darth Bane series which established the Rule of Two and seeing the Rule of Two in place throughout the Star Wars movies, I loved seeing what a Sith society (Sithciety?) looked like. The book is told through the eyes of Revan, a sort-of Jedi, and Lord Scourge, a Sith. As usual, Drew Karpyshyn is able to masterfully write and develop characters and events from both sides of the force. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

Finally!! The epic conclusion is here!! My only complaint is the lack of finality. After 6 books you want there to be the feeling that the story has ended. The world will return to a new sense of peace, at least for awhile. New stories will always emerge just as there were decades of peace between Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices series) and City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments series). Frustratingly, I felt that City of Heavenly Fire was almost focused more on setting up for Cassandra Clare's new shadowhunter series The Dark Artifices than concluding The Mortal Instruments. There was just too much "putting the cart before the horse" for me to give it five stars but still very exciting and full of laughs and tears. Worth reading!

This book is called Darth Plagueis, but it should really be called Darth Sidious. The book begins with the rise of Darth Plagueis, who I found to be so intriguing and different from Darth Bane. However, soon after we meet a young man on Naboo, Palpatine, and the story's focus abruptly changes. While the backstory of Darth Sidious is interesting, I was bummed out there wasn't more about Darth Plagueis. Story is still entertaining and weaves canon history and movie events seamlessly.

After greatly enjoying the movie with Brad Pitt, I wanted to read the book is was based on. As my friends had warned me, the book was quite different from the movie, however it was still fun to read. World War Z is written as a series of interviews with survivors of the zombie war. Together these short stories weave an account of how the undead appeared around the world and how the world eventually fought back. Brooks creates very real and interesting characters who each coped with the war in different ways. Everyone should read this book so we can learn from our fictitious mistakes and be fully prepared for the real World War Z!

The Mind's Eye will show you how incredible your eyes are and how capable your body is of adapting when something happens to them. Great book to read and mull over before bed. Check it out!

A strong stomach is recommended for this disgustingly fascinating book. Learn all sorts of things you never knew you wanted to know! Like, was South Park right? If you shove food up your butt will you really poop out your mouth? And why should hooping only ever refer to hula hoops? This humorously informative book is the adults version of "The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body". You'll never think about eating the same way again!

Darth Bane's body is starting to fail, aka, he's gettin' old! Is Zannah ready to take over the role as Master? Read to find out! Not as exciting as the first two books but as I got to the point where the plot started to really come together I couldn't put it down! Not too sure how I feel about the ending... It wasn't a very satisfying ending as it leaves a lot open. Regardless, I still felt that overall it was a fun book to read and a very addictive series! Check it out! Remember, if we want to defeat the Sith, we must learn all we can about their history. So do your part!

I don't understand why everyone says this book is amazing. It's not. The whole story is tied to a little girl you meet in the beginning. She has power and must be taught. At the end of the book, she still hasn't been taught anything. There was no point to this story. How can this be the end of the series, when they introduced a new story line and then never resolve it? Absolutely terrible. Her strong, main, magical characters are reduced to lives of boring unmagical mediocrity, which isn't very interesting to read about. Do not read.

Very exciting!! However, this second book of the Darth Bane trilogy is quite disheartening. The Sith were almost totally destroyed! Yet now Bane and his new apprentice begin to weave their web of deceit as they slowly take root in the galaxy. They grow stronger with each passing day and the Jedi are still oblivious! How will the Jedi discover them? How can the Jedi beat them? If you want to find you you'll have to read!

I thought this book was much better than the first, but not as good as the second. The ending was very anti-climactic, especially for the resolution of a trilogy. I finished it being quite disappointed. The Earthsea trilogy is supposedly up there with The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia but I don't think it's of the same caliber. Some parts of the story were imaginative and interesting, but overall I felt the series to be just ok.

Even though I really didn't like the first Earthsea book, I'm so glad I decided to read this second one. I found this setting of mysterious priestesses belonging to an ancient order to be much more intriguing than the barrage of countless islands in the first book. I also felt the "eaten one" to be a much more interesting character, full of depth, as compared to the mostly one-dimensional angry Ged of book one. The wait to see how this new storyline connected with the first also kept me interested. Worth checking out!

I didn't really enjoy this book. The main character wasn't very likable and the ending was predictable and anti-climactic. The entire second half of the book was painfully slow and uninteresting. The book is written with a language that was often burdened with overly mysterious narration so as to be written from the viewpoint of a very wise mage. Descriptions and plot explanations were superfluously vague in an attempt to be profound. Did not really enjoy.

I've been wanting to start reading into the Star Wars extended universe for awhile now. After not knowing where to start, I was gifted this book and let me tell you: it was EVERTHING I dreamed it would be! Impressive characters, crazy lightsaber battles, galactic war, deception, the works! I would find myself sympathizing and rooting for the main character only to remember that he was a Sith! He is evil! No rooting for him allowed! Fantastic book about the origins of the Sith's Rule of Two. A must read for Star Wars fans!

Ahh!!! Tally got prettified and now her head is all bubbly! While this book is pretty exciting, it can be a little frustrating since the main character basically had her memory wiped. The reader knows more than Tally and you just want to yell at the book to tell her what to do! Fun book but repeats a lot from the first book.

This book was utterly disappointing. The world of "Extras" hardly resembles the world we grew to love with "Uglies", "Pretties" and "Specials". Not to mention that suddenly there are these weird alien-like creatures?? What!? This book is so disjointed from the Uglies Trilogy, it's like eating a delicious dessert only to be left with a horrible aftertaste. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT read this book. Read "Specials" and then leave it at that.

Even with all that we know, there's still so much that's a mystery! Oliver Sacks investigates seven paradoxical tales about how we perceive color, access memory, concentrate and more! They will blow your mind! Absolutely fascinating. Oliver Sacks is an amazing writer, able to communicate complex medical information in a way that's easy to absorb. Such a great book. Highly recommend!

This book is so bubbly reader-wal, I almost can't handle it! Ok, so the made up slang from the book gets kind of annoying. If you can get past that, the book is fantastic. Everyone in this society is born ugly and are creatively called Uglies. When you reach a certain age you get high tech surgery to make you pretty. Can you guess what those people are called? Well, the main character is on the verge of getting her prettifying surgery when she gets wrapped up in rebels and conspiracy plots. Very exciting, fun, and ironically a great self esteem boost! Highly recommend!

Deliver Us from Evil: True Cases of Haunted Houses and Demonic Attacks
by

The short chapters make this book quick and easy to read. The author of this book is married to the daughter of the famous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Each chapter is the story of a different case that the Warrens have worked on. I liked this book because it discussed a large range of negative paranormal experiences: possession, hauntings, curses, demonic attacks, etc. I didn't like that many of the stories ended unresolved. What happened to those people?? If you're interested in learning a little about this topic, this is a good book to read. If you're more of an "expert" then you'll be disappointed with the lack of detailed explanations.

In the current day and age where we have endless amounts of knowledge available on our mobile devices it's hard to imagine a time without a dictionary. "The Professor and the Madman" can be somewhat pretentious in it's purposeful use of sesquipedalian (long) words, but the story was fascinating! I know the history of the dictionary sounds like a snoozefest, but it gets so crazy it's almost hard to believe! Worth checking out. Very interesting.

Overall "Catching Fire" is an exciting sequel to the chart-topping, smash hit, literary success called "The Hunger Games". The overall premise of the second book was highly predictable causing the first half of the book to be quite bland. However, it picks up in the second half adding new plot lines with unexpected twists and turns. If you haven't read the first book, hurry up and catch up so you can read this one. Plus, now it's a movie that I've heard is pretty good.

As the title suggests, this book is about a bunch of hungry people who like games- and I mean all kinds of games: monopoly, hide and seek, dungens and dragons, uno, etc. Alright I admit it, that's not really what the book's about. If you've seen the movie and liked it you must read the book. As with any book turned movie, the book has so much more depth and character development. You'll be blown away. Read it.

If you managed to endure the train wreck of a book Insurgent was, dont lose hope! Allegiant is shockingly really, really good! I think this is the first time I've ever liked a book later in the series more than the first! Crazy! The first books are always the best! Allegiant was a great end to this trilogy. I highly encourage suffering through the hormone-laden pages of Insurgent to get to this book.

One of the best young adult novels I've read in awhile! The heroine of this story is akin to Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. She might be out doing sometimes dangerous work rounding up violent paranormals but she's still an average teen girl at heart: obsessed with all things pink and shiny, and CAN'T miss an episode of her favorite high school teen show on TV. Even though its a pretty quick read, the characters are fun and creative, the plot takes interesting turns, and the story moves along at a good pace. Great book!

Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side: Star Wars
by

As a Jedi, this book was instrumental in my education of the dark side. After learning about the history of the Sith, and the philosophies of various Dark Lords, it's hard to believe they attract any followers at all. We Jedi believe in balance and peace, so at times reading about such anger and hate was difficult. However, to maintain peace in the galaxy it's important to learn about those who wish to institute a time of pain and chaos. The notations in the margin by Darth Sidious and Jedi Master Luke Skywalker were particularly helpful.

While the first book in the Divergent series was enjoyable, this second book was hard to finish. The plot seemed to take a backseat to the main character's teenage angst with her first boyfriend. Ex: I love you! But I don't trust you. Let's make out. Wait, why are we making out? I'm mad you didn't trust me! But I still love you! Bleh.

Carly's Voice: Breaking Through Autism

This book is AMAZING. It provides a candid look at the struggles of dealing with autism from two perspectives: a parent trying to raise a child with severe autism and a child experiencing severe autism. It's that second perspective that is so rare and insightful. Carly has managed to overcome unbelievable barriers and is finally able to provide that critical dialogue of what it's like having autism and why autistic people do the things they do. As someone who occasionally works with children with autism, Carly's explanations have given me a better understanding of how I can help. Carly's Voice is beyond inspiring, I can't wait to see what she accomplishes as an adult!

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen Year Old Boy with Autism

While this book received a lot of hype, I didn't find it as insightful as everyone was saying. I understand that since we're still struggling to understand autism and how best to help, any insight into what these children are experiencing is extremely valuable. However, compared to the book "Carly's Voice", "The Reason I Jump" doesn't provide a lot of tips on how to help. Naomi Higashida, the author of this book, focuses on encouraging caregivers to not give up. For some, this may be exactly what they need to hear. Regardless, this is a necessary read for anyone who knows or works with someone with autism.

However, she is fiesty and follows her gut. The plot is interesting and takes place in a society where everyone is divided into four distinct groups. The groups have previously gotten along in harmony but tensions are mounting! Read Divergent to find out more!
