The Seamstress of Acadie
by
Laura Frantz
Claire B
, December 09, 2023
The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz masterfully weaves an exceptional story of faith, hope, and love set in a time of great conflict, war, and the tragic story of the Acadians in the French and British conflict in the pre-American revolution mid-18th century. While mostly unfamiliar with this time in history, I greatly appreciated how Ms. Frantz brings this great conflict and tragedy to light. I truly enjoy historical fiction that not only has depth of historical context, but that also brings readers a first-person experience of the daily struggles and joys experienced in that time. Ms. Franz excels at the delicate balance between history and fiction, captivating, entertaining, and educating her readers. The characters in The Seamstress of Acadie were so intriguing, unique, and well-developed. I enjoyed seeing the progression and growth in the main characters as they overcame difficulties and learned hard life lessons. I also appreciated the mix of mystery, intrigue, adventure, faith, and romance. There was a great deal of adventure and suspense in this work, but mixed perfectly with sweet, heartwarming, and even heartbreaking times. I appreciated the historical context, the great characters, excellent themes, and the overall package. The Seamstress of Acadie is an exceptional book and I highly recommend it! Her Secret Hope
by
Shelley Shepard Gray
Claire B
, November 28, 2023
Her Secret Hope brings readers back for a third visit to the peaceful and refreshing Pinecraft, Florida, in Shelley Shepard Gray's A Season in Pinecraft series. I appreciate the wholesome, sweet, faith-filled stories that Ms. Gray writes. Lilly Kurtz is a quiet hardworking young Amish woman who wants a fresh start in Pinecraft, Florida away from her Ohio hometown and her past. Lilly's friends make her feel welcome and support Lilly in her role of housekeeping at the local bed and breakfast. As Lilly settles into life in Pinecrest, she meets November, a sweet and fun older guest. November's grandson Eddie Byler is a hardworking farmer who runs into Lilly and can't stop thinking about her. Lilly and Eddie soon discover that they both come from the very same hometown, leaving Lilly afraid of Eddie discovering her secrets. Can they find a way to each move on from their pasts and discover a future together? Read Her Secret Hope to find out for yourself. I appreciated Ms. Gray's sweet storytelling in Her Secret Hope and the way she brought practical and clear life lessons of faith, forgiveness, reconciliation, and courage to the readers. I appreciate the simplicity and genuineness of the story and the way the characters encouraged, challenged, and protected one another. If you are looking for a sweet, slow-paced, charming read this is it. Happy reading! Disclaimer: Revell graciously provided me with a copy of this book. The Warsaw Sisters: A Novel of WWII Poland
by
Amanda Barratt
Claire B
, November 18, 2023
The Warsaw Sisters by Amanda Barratt delivers quite an impact to its readers. Knowing the historical context of this book I was expecting it to be quite touching, but I was unprepared for the utter depths of human emotion, courage, and horror that Ms. Barratt described in this masterful work. If you are unaware of the deprivations and horrors of World War II, be prepared for some heartbreaking and inhumane but true facts. The inhumanity that occurred during the war is horrific, yet Ms. Barratt brought to the readers' attention the amazing heroics that ordinary people rise to when in dark times. I appreciated the realistic outlook that Ms. Barratt brought to this work with characters that are flawed, fearful, conflicted, and yet utterly determined to take a stand in whatever way they can. I also appreciated how Ms. Barratt did not glamourize war, but showed the true and necessary grimness of such fighting and violence. I truly enjoyed this book and was spellbound by the way that Ms. Barratt brought readers a first-person view of war-torn Poland. I highly recommend this book! The Fugitive King
by
Henry O. Arnold
Claire B
, November 18, 2023
The Fugitive King by Henry O. Arnold brings the Biblical account of King David to readers in a new and intriguing perspective. This book gives an interesting look at the life of a well-known and well-studied historical and biblical character, King David, the slayer of the giant Goliath, and the one called "a man after God's own heart." Mr. Arnold brings readers this fourth book in his series The Song of Prophets and Kings. Although I have not read the first three books in this series, I was able to read and understand the context of this work. I appreciated the richness of the context of this book with the clear scriptural history and details. It was a very intriguing read for me to have a more first-person view of the life of David and of those in that historic time. I know I take for granted the big picture of the history of David as a shepherd, giant slayer, and king; however, I forget all of the in-between times were full of failures and triumphs and The Fugitive King brings such a worthy tale to life. Overall, this was a very unique read and full of intrigue, heartbreak, and faith. Happy readings! Disclaimer: White Fire Publishing graciously provided me with a copy of this book. Shadows at Dusk
by
Elizabeth Goddard

Shadows at Dusk by Elizabeth Goddard brings readers a gripping tale of heart-pounding adventure, intrigue, and complex and mysterious plotlines. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Goddard's second book in her Missing in Alaska series. From the first page I was hooked and barely put Shadows at Dusk down. I loved the stubborn, no-quit attitude each character displayed. I always enjoy Ms. Goddard's writings especially the strong characters, deep and intricate plots, and rich context. Shadows at Dusk brings you a gripping tale that you won't want to miss out on! Trevor West is a detective from Montana who is desperate to find his sister Jennifer, missing in Alaska for over a year. Trevor learns some clues about his sister, rushes to Alaska, and hires Carrie James, an experienced bush pilot, to assist him in his search. Carrie suddenly experiences the devastating loss of her closest friend. As Trevor pushes to find the truth about his sister Carrie is fiercely determined to track down her friend's killer. The truth is shrouded in mystery with deep and confusing webs that bring Carrie and Trevor into serious danger. As Carrie and Trevor follow the cryptic clues left behind by Jennifer, they are bombarded with obstacles. Can they discover the evil behind the scenes of each of their heartbreaks? Can they find Jennifer? Disclaimer: Revell graciously provided me with a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and part of an unbiased review.

Against the Wind
by
Amanda Cabot
Claire B
, October 07, 2023
Against the Wind by Amanda Cabot brings readers a second taste of her wholesome Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series. I truly enjoyed and related to the main characters of Louisa and Josh, especially Louisa’s stubbornness, drive, and compassion. I appreciated seeing the lives of the characters from the first book. The town of Sweetwater Crossing holds more mystery and danger than its unsuspicious name and first glance. Louisa Vaughn never intended on returning to her hometown, but her compassionate heart can't refuse returning for a few days to support her grieving friend. On the trip to Sweetwater Crossing, Louisa happens upon a seriously injured man. The townspeople are highly skeptical of Louisa as a female doctor. The injured stranger, Josh Porter has a great appreciation for Louisa as she rescued him and set his broken leg. Josh's proposal for his grandfather for Josh to head up the family's massive business have taken a huge detour. Will Louisa be able to become her community's doctor and gain their respect? Can Josh figure out what he truly wants to do with his life, become a business tycoon or something completely unexpected? Can Josh and Louisa uncover who is behind the threats against them? Overall, I recommend this book and hope that you have the chance to read and enjoy it! Happy readings! Disclaimer: Revell graciously provided me with a copy of this book. The All-American
by
Susie Finkbeiner
Claire B
, August 04, 2023
The All-American by Susie Finkbeiner is a tale of two sisters with vastly different interests as they grow into adulthood during the 1950s in America. With common childhood struggles, triumphs, The All-American brings readers a heartwarming tale full of tragedy, triumph, and perseverance. Bertha Harding has a true passion for baseball and will not let anything trivial, such as boys, dances, other such frivolities get in the way of the game. Bertha's sister Flossie has a different perspective and loves her books, but longs to fit in. Their lives drastically change when their father is accused of being part of the Communist Party. The Harding family quickly uproots and moves to a new life in rural Michigan with the girls' uncle. The historic context throughout The All-American was well done. I was reminded of some of my favorite reading I had done in a humanities class, history written in a way that was related to the practical, everyday lives of Americans. I enjoyed Ms. Finkbeiner's writing style, as this was my first read of her works. This book has excellent historical context, well-developed characters, sweet family dialogue. It is a wholesome and entertaining book, but I think it would be a one-time-read for me. I appreciated the literary references and the humor throughout this novel. Overall, this was a good read and I hope you enjoy it as well! Disclaimer: Revell graciously provided me with a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and part of an unbiased review.
