Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

About the Author

Jean Craighead George was born in a family of naturalists. Her father, mother, brothers, aunts and uncles were students of nature. On weekends they camped in the woods near their Washington, D.C. home, climbed trees to study owls, gathered edible plants and made fish hooks from twigs. Her first pet was a turkey vulture. In third grade she began writing and hasn't stopped yet. She has written over 100 books.

My Side of the Mountain, is a great survival story. It's about a boy named, Sam Gribley. Sam runs away in to the Catskill mountains. Sam knows nothing about surviving in the woods, he brings a penknife, a ball of cord, a hatchet, and 40 dollars. In the book he captures, and raises a falcon named, Frightful, he also befriends a weasel named, Baron. This book is in someways like Hatchet. My Side of the Mountain is a great read, for people ages 8 to adult. You will either love or hate the main character, Sam. If you like books about the woods, you will enjoy My Side of the Mountain

My Side of the Mountain is one of the best books I read. It is a really facinating tale of how Sam Gribley gathers up the courage and runs off to the Gribley farm to live by him self. In this book, Sam learns how to make his own supplies and learns hunting and trapping skills, accompanied by his loyal companion, Frightful. I assure you, this book is for any reader who loves a good adventure. Jean Craighead George did a fantastic job with the details, settings and emotions.

Jean Craighead George is one of my favorite authors. She really transports you to another time and place. My Side of the Mountain is about a teenage boy who runs away from home to live on the catskills (a mountain range). The book tells you about how he survives and adapts to living in the wild all alone. Not to mention his trusty peregrine falcon, Frightful! A really great book, especially for nature loving children or teenagers!

I am 37 years old and I read this book when I was only a young child. It opened up a whole new world for me, every time I opened the pages. Little Sam managed to fulfill all of my childhood dreams of adventure. He confronted every problem, that we ourselves would encounter, should we ever descide to follow in his footsteps. Strangly for a boy of his age, he even managed to include the importance of hygiene and the dangers of a bad diet. Through the years I have read hundreds of books, but this one I will hold dear to my heart forever. It has been as I said, many years since I read this book and I remember every detail as if it was only yesturday. I am now about to purchase this book again for my little boy to read(but not until I have read it again myself of course) and I know, with his natural craving for adventure, he will climb into the pages, one after the other and live the dream with Sam as I did. An amazing book for any age to enjoy and I am over the moon to descover that Jean craighead George has actually graced us with a sequel. This book will also be going into my collection, as soon as I can get my hands on a copy. Happy reading...

Excellent Story! All ages will love this tale, as it hits home in the heart of anyone that dreams about leaving the material world and venturing into the great unkown. Also a great teaching tool as it gives perfect instruction on how to live off the land in a minimalistic setting, in the forest. I have recommended this book to several friends, and they all would say the same!
