For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one boxed set. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin—dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now here is the entire monumental cycle:

A GAME OF THRONES

A CLASH OF KINGS

A STORM OF SWORDS

A FEAST OF CROWS

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

Review

"Provides the same pleasures as the three earlier books: deeply involving characters; complicated yet clearly laid out plots; sharply realized settings; language rich in that love of words which is so central to high fantasy." Seattle Times

Review

"The fourth novel in Martin's popular mega-fantasy introduces new plot twists and characters that continue to flesh out one of the genre's most detailed and intriguing worlds....[H]ighly recommended." Library Journal

Review

"Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series is that rare, once-in-a-generation work of fiction that manages to entertain readers while elevating an entire genre to fine literature." Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Review

"Martin's command of English and of characterization and setting remains equal to the task of the fantasy megasaga, which is good because Martin's Song is starting to rival the page count of Robert Jordan's 12-volume Wheel of Time. Good news for readers of robust appetite." Booklist

Review

"Martin has created a full, rich and interesting world filled with colorful characters....This is a series for adults, not children, and readers expecting clean-cut Harry Potter will find themselves less than comfortable in Martin's world." The Oregonian (Portland, OR)

Review

"[A]n 800-page ride through the amazing geography of Martin's imagination....Start wherever you will (but preferably at the beginning with A Game of Thrones) and you can count on being taken a very willing prisoner by this highest of high fantasy achievements." BookReporter.com

Synopsis

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin's monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King's Landing. Robb Stark's demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist — or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces — some familiar, others only just appearing — are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests — but only a few are the survivors.

About the Author

George R. R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally ever since. He has written fantasy, horror, and science fiction, and for his sins spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer/producer, working on Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid-90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris, a big white dog called Mischa, and two cats named Augustus and Caligula who think they run the place.

Ok i have commented on the first two books in this wonderful series not the third one but that is good also i wanted to comment on this one because everywhere i read about it on line said it was the worse one in the series well im here to say they are way off base on this book i didnt want it to end and it i will definitely read it again and again! If you love the characters that everyone else hates this is the series and book you should read! It delves into some of the characters not all and that is why there is a fifth book in this series it shows how the characters who have done terrible things are redeemed and the ones who have no consciences are not This fantasy world is awesome and as you read them its almost like you are right there with them as if you can see it all happen right before your eyes! Read these books you wont be sorry!

As the author himself states in the introduction, the prior book was only half the story he meant to tell and this book begins by telling more sides of the same story, which is a good thing. Then it goes on to bring many events to a climax but it leaves out half of the still living major characters from previous books...but that's okay too! Because the stories for this books characters are so wonderfully, fully developed and, best of all, the ones you were wondering about will be featured in his next book! Hopefully those whose ends seemed not quite certain in the last chapters of 'Feast' will have their fates answered quickly in the4 next book. I am trying to wait for it to be in paperback so my collection will match - and hardcopies are heavy for lugging to kid's activities where I do most of my reading. I'm 77th in line for my library's copy. I want a Nook for Christmas. I am in The Race for the Reading of A Dance with Dragons! /angst

There are some great character developments in this book, but I can see why fans were so aggravated when they had the long wait between Storm of Swords and Feast for Crows, and then had to wait until just a few weeks ago to have some of the cliffhangers resolved. There are cliffhangers in Storm of Swords that don't even get TOUCHED by Feast for Crows, because of the way that Martin decided to divide up the story. This volume also feels like a possibly precarious turning point: since many cliffhangers weren't resolved and several new characters were added, it gives one the worrisome feeling that Martin has bitten off more than he can chew and may never finish the series. Leaving aside that niggling worry, there were things about this that I absolutely loved. I missed some of the major characters like Jon Snow and Tyrion, but I was pretty happy to have so much Cersei and Jaime. Watching the two of them drift farther and farther apart is fascinating and surprisingly difficult, although I will also cop to a certain amount of glee over Cersei's downfall. Loved getting more Samwell. I really really hope that Martin continues to allow Samwell to be a character that I don't feel conflicted about liking -- he has his faults, but he's one of the few really genuinely decent and chivalrous characters, and one of the few I would really be saddened to see turn out to be like all the rest. Can't wait to read Dance With Dragons, and I'm hoping Martin takes some deep breaths and knuckles down right quick...

This is my second most favorite series to read. George R. R. Martin does a fantastic job at building characters. He does a great job of playing politics, back stabbing and overall adventure in this series. This book has it all. I can't put these books down. In two months I have read all four of them. For me, that is fast. These series kind of takes you by surprise because he constantly introduces new characters were other fantasy books keep to the same characters through the entire series. I highly recommend this series to all readers.
