I loved this book! It's the only Cormac McCarthy I've read and I will likely reread it soon. Picturesque, historical, horse-loving and romantic. A real page-turner!

Cormac McCarthy masterfully drawls out a scenic and sensitive tale of two young cowboys. This makes me want to buy a cowboy hat and learn how to say a lot with few words. An artful read regardless of preferred genre.

McCarthy is a master of the mythic cowboy -- the blood-red sunsets, the wolves, the weird rides through the dark, the rain, the gloom. The leaning and spitting. The rolling of cigarettes. The one-word sentence. He will steal your heart, pause a moment, and ride into the night; leaving you cold, breathless -- in awe.

McCarthy is one of the most brilliant writers of our time. His lush, lyrical language draws me, willing or not, further and further into his dark and dangerous vision of the world. John Grady Cole is a deep and fascinating character. He humbly underrates himself, without being the least whiny, which makes him a vast improvement over so many of the recent crop of flawed protagonists. My AP students are reading this now, and a whole new generation of McCarthy lovers is being born.

Cormac McCarthy is a master of language. The simplest of sentences can put one in a swoon. This city girl fell in love with a horse at his bidding.

What an amazing book. I don't know how it could have been better. The way the sections of the book flow from one to the next is so natural and perfect and while the action continues right where it left off, you really get the sense that an act has concluded and a new act has begun. It's so much fun to read such a well written novel.

McMarthy's spare writing and superb character development make this book a treat to read. I love how this Western is set in the not-so-old West.

Don't be put off this book by the not-so-great movie. This was a wonderful book. The journey that the main character and his friend take is worth every page, alone. The book actually contavins two stories, thejourney and what happens at the other end. This is a lifetime favorite.
