Esther Yi: The Writers That Haunt Me: Esther Yi’s Bookshelf for 'Y/N' (0 comment)
I’m haunted by a handful of writers all long dead. They set the standard; naturally I fail. Anything I read of theirs promptly enters my bloodstream, whereupon mysterious internal fomentation proceeds. Y/N is simply the latest extrusion, a concerted one...

25 Best Sci-fi and Fantasy Books of the 21st Century (So Far)

Staff Pick

Published within the span of a year, the Southern Reach trilogy begins with Annihilation. A stunning first part, the story is a strange mix of bio-horror and sci-fi. A little bit Alice in Wonderland, a little bit At the Mountains of Madness, VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy has earned him a place as one of the best contemporary sci-fi authors. Area X has an infectious hold on me, and restored my tumultuous relationship with the genre. Recommended By Alex Y., Powells.com

VanderMeer's Annihilation is a disturbing yet intriguing story that keeps you turning pages. Four women of varying scientific professions are assigned to venture into Area X on a 12th expedition. No one before them has survived. Peer into the journal of the Biologist as she writes her firsthand account of Area X. Recommended By Rin S., Powells.com

Vandermeer's lush and Lovecraftian writing sends the reader into an other-worldly experience.  Recommended By Adrienne C., Powells.com

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition.

The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it's the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

Review

"A gripping fantasy thriller, Annihilation is thoroughly suspenseful. In a manner similar to H. G. Wells's in The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), VanderMeer weaves together an otherworldly tale of the supernatural and the half-human. Delightfully, this page-turner is the first in a trilogy."  Heather Paulson, ALA Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

"After their high-risk expedition disintegrates, it's every scientist for herself in this wonderfully creepy blend of horror and science fiction . . . Speculative fiction at its most transfixing."  Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

Review

"A tense and chilling psychological thriller about an unraveling expedition and the strangeness within us. A little Kubrick, a lot Lovecraft, the novel builds with an unbearable tension and a claustrophobic dread that linger long afterward. I loved it." Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls

Review

"In much of Jeff VanderMeer's work, a kind of radiance lies beating beneath the surface of the words. Here in Annihilation, it shines through with warm blazing incandescence. This is one of a grand writer's finest and most dazzling books." Peter Straub, author of Lost Boy, Lost Girl

Review

"One of those books where it all comes together — the story and the prose and the ideas, all braided into a triple helix that gives rise to something vibrant and alive. Something that grows, word-by-word, into powerful, tangled vines that creep into your mind and take hold of it. Annihilation is brilliant and atmospheric, a novel that has the force of myth." Charles Yu, author of How to Live in a Science Fictional Universe

Jeff VanderMeer on PowellsBooks.Blog

You have to trust your subconscious when it tells you that a flying bear makes sense and that things will accrete around that. What I realized with this book, as opposed to the Southern Reach, is that the Southern Reach has an accretion of detail in a totally different way...

I really enjoyed this book. It is basically a Lovecraft story minus the racism plus a POV character whose reaction to the weirdness is not "this is so horrifying my brain is melting!" but "this looks dangerous but fascinating". The movie with Natalie Portman captures the vibe of the book but the plot is quite different, and I much prefer the book ending. The other books in the trilogy are maybe 4-stars for me but quite good as well, and they fill in details the first narrator (who has rather poor social skills) neglected to mention. I was wary of this book, because it's outside of the genres I usually stick to, but it was beautiful and terrifying. I couldn't put it down! Vandemeer creates a lush world that is also unsettling to the core. I can't wait to read the next installment.

This eerie, unsettling story is a study in ambiguous contradictions - so much happens, but you're not sure what. You know the setting is fantastical, but can't really describe it. Something is wrong, lies are being told, but the origin of them and the truth are shrouded. This is either a love it or hate it book, if the first 50 pages seem boring to you rather than gripping (I found it to be gripping), I'd recommend jumping ship because the tone and style are consistent throughout.

This book is terrifying and well written. With the right amount of chills and mystery I was sucked in and had to keep reading. The shortness of the novel contributes to the thrilling pace. I'm excited to read more about Area X and hopefully get to the bottom of it all.

I found this book to be so interesting. I liked the way it was written as both a journal of sorts and a narrative. I also liked the scientific/factual approach to the narrative voice; I found that it increased the suspense and the strangeness of the story. I'm really looking forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy!

This book will draw you in to a world that over takes the senses. A quick, but curious read these 200 pages will leave you wanting more. Good news this is the first of a trilogy. I have heard mix reviews of the trilogy as a whole, but as for the first book I am hooked. I need to know more about this land: what's going on, what will happen, how did it start, what will become of our narrator?

Jeffrey Bluhm , February 22, 2015 (view all comments by Jeffrey Bluhm)
This review is for the entire series, as I read, and cautiously enjoyed, the first two books, in great part with anticipation for revelations and a conclusion(s) in the final novel. Unfortunately, that never occurs. Characterizations are, at best, impersonal, and the writing sporadically clear, then muddled. The intent of the author seems to be to describe humanity's encounter with another culture so alien that we can't communicate with it or understand its intent/purpose, and while that prospect is intellectually plausible, given the myriad ways in which life could evolve in another time/place, the lack of meaningful interaction between the characters and whatever that Other is, deprives the story of interest and prevents it from coming to any comprehensible conclusion. Of all the questions that are posed or develop over the course of the three books few, if any, are answered coherently. The concepts are not without merit, and much promise is hinted at but, ultimately, the series fails to deliver.

I normally don't like creepy/suspenseful stories, but this book blew my mind. It kept me up at night reading. The pacing is fabulous and I love the writing. The story is fascinating, with really well-done twists that I didn't see coming (and I'm usually great at predicting plot twists.) The rest of the series is good, but if you don't have the time or don't want to make the commitment, reading Annihilation is honestly enough. Enjoy!

I couldn't seem to put this book down, every time I read before bed I would put it down unwillingly due to exhaustion from staying up thinking 'just one more page' ending up reading another quarter of the book. Small in size it still packs a load of information that draws you in and begs to be read more. The moment I finished I ran back to buy the rest of the series.

The Loopy Librarian , October 29, 2014 (view all comments by The Loopy Librarian)
Area X has my undivided attention. An amazing genre-bending start to what is sure to be a surreal trip through three books. The writing style is clear and linguistically appealing creating vivid mind-blowing pictures that mix myth with an unsettling and horrifying “reality.” The atmospheric distortion is tense, creepy and brilliant. I was completely engrossed and terrified. The unreliable narrator adds to the fear and uncertainty of the characters and the reader. A bizarre blend of sci-fi, horror, mystery, and suspense that is riveting. Highly recommended for any adventurous reader! Don’t expect to find familiar ground here, but expect to be sucked in.

An unnamed female biologist narrates the story of the 12th expedition into the mysterious Area X in the Southern Reach, a region that is home to strange, anomalous activity with a border that seems to be expanding. This was a great read for me. It embraced the 19th-century/early 20th-century weird fiction that I have always loved with a 21st-century fatalism and scientific detachment. This struck some of the same chords that "The Boats of the 'Glen Carrig'" did in me: the way our world can become so utterly alien and menacing. I'm anxious to get started on the rest of the trilogy.

This book is absolutely a must read for any fans of classic science fiction and horror. It is eloquently written and a real page turner. In its evocation of atmosphere and its execution it reminded me a lot of Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. It unfolds in a brilliant fashion and I am eagerly awaiting the sequels.

This book is ridiculous! I absolutely loved it, and cannot wait for the second installation. Beware: You will get stressed out while reading this, but, if all goes well, your mind will also be blown and you will insist that everyone around you also read it. I don't want to say too much about the plot because the less you know in advance, the better. READ THIS!
