Impossibly imaginative and brilliant! Jonathan Safran Foer writes a caricature of himself into this work, flirting with the fiction/nonfiction divide, weaving the whole thing together with the threads of memory and lineage and imagined versions of ourselves. If only the war hadn't happened, Jonathan might have been Alexi. It's a fascinating, mesmerizing kaleidoscopic book full of Yiddish folklore and unapologetic hyperbole. A must read for visual-linguistic creative thinkers who like non-conformist writing.

I have a passionate, possibly irrational hatred of this book. Here's Triumph the Insult Dog's review: "Everything is illuminated. . .for me to poop on!"

I can't really describe what this book did to me, but it comes close to heartbreak and revelation. I loved these characters wholeheartedly and I wanted to step inside the book so I could hug each one. Jonathan Safran Foer has done something incredible and taken history, family, and love to a place that is at once wonderful but soul-tearing. Absolutely one of my all-time favorites.

I loved reading this book and I recommend this book to everyone I know. Foer did an amazing job with his debut novel and I'm so happy I picked it up when I did.

My favorite book of the 00s, and favorite debut novel. It has a little bit of everything--magical realism, history, horrible sadness, hilarity. The story centers around the novel's "hero" who, coincidentally, shares the same name as the author--Jonathan Safran Foer. The hero travels to the Ukraine to find the woman that helped his grandfather survive the Holocaust. Along that search we learn of his family history, and that of his unintentionally hilarious translator, his family, and how they intertwine. Nothing I can write will really do justice to this surprising and remarkably original work of fiction. Just read it already!

By far the best book I've read this decade! Smart, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and a touching emotional journey. Beautifully written; Jonathan Safran Foer is one of the greatest young writers of the 21st century!

On the surface "Everything Is Illuminated" is a simple story of a Jewish American, named for the author, who travels to the Ukraine in order to research his family's history. In fact, the book tells two intersecting stories: one of Foer's ancestors and one of his current travels with his travel guides, Alex, his grandfather, and their ridiculous dog. While the story begins as humorous, it quickly gets to the root of the issues and a mix begins to occur between the ridiculous and the moving. I saw this as a clever parallel on life itself: we hide emotions behind humor, but eventually everyone must confront themselves in order to move forward. The story of this unlikely group's journey begins to become not just Jonathan's story, but Alex and his grandfather's as well. While Foer searches for his family and the mysterious Augustine, Alex unexpectedly confronts his own family history and his grandfather faces his past. It becomes a story of two families that parallel each other in strange and surprising ways. On the reader's tour of the Ukraine, Foer takes the time to treat us to humorous interludes from the road, as well as fleshing out the quirky history of the hero's family. His creative use of language amazed, as well as drew me further into the story and connected me to his character's emotions. This novel is highly recommended, but a warning to readers looking for a funny book about a road trip: look elsewhere.

This was truly one the most cleverly written books I have ever read. The character Alex's narration in his butchered English shine a humourous light on the more deep, though churning, and moving aspects of this book. Not only does Jonathan Safran Foer look into the past, but he shines a light on future generations. This book seems highley personal with a location in Ukraine, characters in need of ESL, and a Jewish ansectory; yet after reading this book one feels more enlightened about everyone's past, and the future we are all a part of. This book must be read by everyone!

Emotional in every aspect! This is not a novel where you can put on autopilot and simply read through it. Uniquely put together. I've never read a book that was written like this one.

Epic and still intimate. A fantastic work (in every respect). A great addition to the tradition of Jewish-American literature.
