Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Everything we do is based on agreements we have made — agreements with ourselves, with other people, with God, with life. But the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves. In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, how to behave, what is possible, what is impossible. One single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that come from fear, deplete our energy, and diminish our self-worth.

In this powerful book that has remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over five years, don Miguel reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. When we are ready to change these agreements, there are four deceptively simple, yet powerful agreements that we can adopt as guiding principles. The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.

Synopsis

In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman.

About the Author

Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers, and raised in rural Mexico by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather. The family anticipated that Miguel would embrace their centuries-old legacy of healing and teaching, and carry forward the esoteric Toltec knowledge. Instead, distracted by modern life, Miguel chose to attend medical school and become a surgeon.

A near-death experience changed his life. Late one night in the early 1970s, he awoke suddenly, having fallen asleep at the wheel of his car. At that instant the car careened into a wall of concrete. Don Miguel remembers that he was not in his physical body as he watched himself pull his two friends to safety.

Stunned by this experience, he began an intensive practice of self-inquiry. He devoted himself to the mastery of the ancient ancestral wisdom, studying earnestly with his mother, and completing an apprenticeship with a powerful shaman in the Mexican desert. His grandfather, who had since passed on, continued to teach him in his dreams.

In the tradition of the Toltec, a nagual guides an individual to personal freedom. Don Miguel Ruiz, a nagual from the Eagle Knight lineage, is dedicated to sharing his knowledge of the teachings of the ancient Toltec. For more than a decade, he has worked to impart this wisdom to his students through lectures, workshops, and journeys to sacred sites around the world.

I truly endeavor to read this book once a year. Parts of this book were instantly illuminating and brought aha! moments upon me. There were other points that took longer to sink in. Every time I read this book, it made a little more sense and felt more ingrained in my heart and soul. But truly, from the first read, there were nuggets of wisdom that changed my life for the better.

Ruiz's book is simple and straight forward. For some people who have been seeking for some time it might be too simplistic. At the time I read it I was ready to release old thinking and was able to experience healing from past hurts. I am not a writer, I wish I could express how much impact this book had on me. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking why life isn't working for them, going thru a life trauma (divorce), etc. A great tool in breaking free of inaccurate thinking.

Just when you think you have *life* all figured out---here is ancient wisdom. A fascinating work. This small book holds your attention, and will give you the power to change your life by looking at the world, and yourself, through new eyes and paradigm. Amazing.

Simple, profound and powerful. It is also a slim book; easy to manage in a short afternoon if you were so inclined. This book summarizes keys to personal, social and cultural success in four simple rules. It can change your life and the collective dream of the world that we all share.

this is a timeless masterpiece and a simple guide to everyday living. if we all worked at following the four agreements as outlined in this easy to read and understand book, the world might be a more compassionate place. i would highly recommend this book to any person and think that it would be great as a junior high or high school textbook. this could also be a great tool for reforming prisoners and other people with troubles. do yourself a favor and read it. then live by it.

This book was very interesting in the format it is presented. It is difficult to decipher if the author accepts Christianity or not, which was confusing. The principles are essentially the same principles that Jesus taught, just in a clearer and more concise language. It is well worth the investment! If nothing else, it will make you ponder for days - which is a very good thing.

Same principles as The Secret but I believe in a better and more usable format. I have given several of them as gifts and will continue to do so. It is one of the best.
