Publisher Comments

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin's son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki son of a giant blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Once, when Thor s hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman difficult with his beard and huge appetite to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir the most sagacious of gods is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people.

Through Gaiman's deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

Review

"Who else but Neil Gaiman could become an accomplice of the gods, using the sorcery of words to make their stories new? The author of American Gods transforms Norse myths into addictive reading for young and old, with high-wattage retellings that preserve the monumental grandeur of the Nordic universe but also turn it into a world that is up close and personal, full of antic wit and dark intrigue." Maria Tatar, chair, Program in Folklore and Mythology, Harvard University

Review

"The fascinating ancient tales in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda have always needed gifted storytellers to breathe new life into them from century to century, and who better now than Neil Gailman to retell the tantalizing Norse myths with great gusto. Gaiman has such a profound understanding of the conflicts of Odin, Thor, Loki, and other gods that he revitalizes them through his imaginative depictions. His interpretation of major Norse myths will draw readers into a strange realm that will dazzle and baffle and lead to a new appreciation of Norse mythology." Jack Zipes, editor of The Norton Anthology of Children’s Literature

Gaiman successfully retells various Norse myths in his own witty and humorous style. It was delightful to come upon some myths I had not read before. But also to revisit those I have long knew, through the eye and words of someone who so clearly loves and has been influenced by the myths.

I have yet to find a single piece written by Neil Gaiman that was not amazing. From his blog and books to things as obscure as his BBC miniseries "Neverwhere" (coincidentally featuring the current Dr. Who, Peter Capaldi). The episodes of Dr. Who and many other series he has scripted were amazing, so I am confident this take on the "Norse Mythology" will be phenomenal.

Under the book image on your website, it says "Signed Edition". Is Gaiman coming to do a reading, or is Powell's just getting copies that he's already signed?

I cannot WAIT for this one! I've been in love with Norse mythology since I read the Starling trilogy by Lesley Livingston (Fantastic YA trilogy, by the way!).But Neil Gaiman, come ON, what a fantasy icon! This is now at the top of my TBR list for early 2017.

THRILLED to see this!! Can't wait to read his retellings. I'd love to pre-order -- is there a possibility that there will be signed editions? If so, I'd want to wait to reserve one of those...Powell's folk, what would you suggest?

Neil Gaiman has already breathed new meaning into Norse mythology, or perhaps written new meaning into our modern lives by bringing the old myths to new retellings in American Gods. Now, with this direct retelling of the Norse myths, we can find new meaning in the old tales, new understanding through the recognition of old symbols of life and death and resurrection, and of all the strange paths, conscious and unconscious, that run between them.
