I borrowed this from the library because I'd read both raves and 'meh' reviews and was a little wary of 'another vampire' book but I was truly wowwed - this was a smart, fascinating read that kept getting better despite its length. Now I can't wait long enough for the library's copy of "The Twelve" to find out what happens next so I'm finally buying copies for myself. Of the three main acts, the 2nd act in First Settlement lagged a bit by the end though it did set up character backgrounds well. A well-imagined world, far closer to sci-fi than fantasy, with believable and varied characters. For anyone who enjoyed "World War Z" for its' socio-political-economical surmising, this is sure to be loved.

This book feels epic. It almost feels like 3 books in one: before the outbreak, during the outbreak, after the outbreak. It is horrifying in it's accuracy of how something like this would actually happen and creates a very good image of the individual people that would be effected and how groups of people could cope to deal with a new world.

Love it! I finished this in 2 days because I couldn't put down except to work and sleep. I liked the fact that book continued to circle back and let us know what had occured why the "main characters" were on their quest/adventure/mission. I liked knowing who/what had occured and learning who was living and who wasn't. Short lived characters were very well done and when they passed you really felt bad for the team. I think that some might compare this to Stephen King's The Stand but IMHO it is much better and doesn't ramble on like The Stand seemed to do. It is a new take on the Vampire genere but one that seems to be very good and I hope that the 2nd book lives up to the first.

Fast pace and gripping, this monstrous novel is a real page turner. Great detail and character development. Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

Interesting, engaging book, but after 800 pages, I feel a little bleary-eyed. Here are my issues with this one: -First half of the book was amazing. It was a book I couldn't wait to pick up after work. The characters were well-thought out and I really liked the build-up to the actual apocalypse. The second-half was plagued (ha) with issues. -Too many characters, ideas, side-plots, etc in the final 400 pages. -Did I not understand the characters A.V. or were their motivations just completely unclear? -So much tension. It was almost nauseating to read the final 400 pages completely on the edge of my seat. -Too many characters were reintroduced through unncessary additional side plots. Theo, for instance, and the entire town with the train and Olsen Hand. Lacey and Jonas. Galen in the barn on the farm. The world is a big place, did these characters really need to return so we could see the completion of their story arcs?! -There was tension constantly leading up to Major Viral Activity and then in some cases, we never got to read 'in-the-moment' about the fights. It was recalled to us afterwards by characters or journals. I don't really get why the exciting parts were recaps and I was especially disappointed by never getting to read The Nights of Blades and Stars. -Too many unbelievable elements in the last 200 pages including at least two too many people with super powers. Why didn't Cronin just cut out about 250 pages? It would have helped with all the above issues, and put this book at a 4 star rating! Still, that said, I liked this one. I will probably read the sequels, eventually. For now, book has set a mood... which mostly has me eyeing the windows and thinking how screwed I would be if virals attacked.

Unbelievably good book--a must read for anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic visions. Cronin spends about 200 pages setting up the story in this 800+ pager, but it feels like 20 pages since the content and style are so outstanding. He really pulls you into the story and makes you feel like you ar living it along with the characters. The ending made me wildly long for the next book, which of course doesn't come out until October. Loved it.

Not just a vampire story, this post-apocalyptic saga weaves together various narratives to create a vast and mysterious new land. Cronin's language makes this 700+ page book fly by, and his characters make you want to read it over again (I did) in anticipation of the next book. This story doesn't conform to any one specific genre and mixes ingenious narration styles to create a seamless world. Highly recommended!
