Read first more than 35 years ago and several times since. This is a great book. The writer lived and wrote primarily in London, working for Oxford Press. During the second world war he moved with his employment down to Oxford where he met C.S. Lewis and became one of the 'Oxford Romantics' - becoming part of the 'Inklings' group which met regularly and included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien of 'Lord of the Rings' fame. The book weaves a story which slips between philosophy, fantasy and soul life. The setting is very British, but slowly a double life emerges where universal archetypes manifest in quiet rural England and wild creatures start to play... It's sometimes a challenge to get into, but well worth the effort. C.S. Lewis thought and spoke highly of this lesser read writer. Deservedly. The book breaks down barriers between fiction, philosophy and spirituality. I think that Williams died about 1945, so that's about the vintage of it. Very worthwhile.
