Hotels charge exorbitant rates to make local and overseas calls--but you can avoid these easily by taking precautions. One estimate says one in three Americans on vacation uses prepaid phone cards. Get smart and save money by using the cards, and don't forget to ask the telephone service provider whether you qualify for mature traveler discounts.

It may not affect you, but I am sometimes amazed and sometimes frightened watching some of these monster RVs driven by men who look old enough to be my father, or even my grandfather. Yet these folks seem quite at home and quite capable at maneuvering these things, which are five or ten times larger than my humble sports utility vehicle.
I have often wondered why people, especially those who reach a certain age, seem so drawn to these metal monsters. Here's what people say. The big boats are comfortable, mobile, and more accommodating than a sterile hotel room. There are queen-sized beds in a good-sized bedroom. The bed is covered with your own sheets and pillowcases, with your own towels in the bathroom. There is plenty of heat or air conditioning when the weather goes to extremes. You carry your clothes from the house to the RV, leaving everything there for the entire trip. Your kitchen comes complete with a stove, oven, and microwave. You can eat what you want, when you want, how you want. Children or guest scan sleep above the cab, others can use the dining room table and benches as a bed. It's cheaper to plug in at an RV campground than it is to stay in a motel for a night....
