Renee Macalino Rutledge: Powell's Q&A: Renee Macalino Rutledge, author of 'One Hundred Percent Me' (0 comment)
Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

This is a (slightly edited for book format) transcript of Adichie's TEDxTalk of the same name. We Should All Be Feminists is accessible and intersectional and is an excellent access point to feminism. I also found it a joy to read, however, as a person who knows my way around the basics of women's studies. A fun fact about the TEDxTalk: Beyoncé sampled a portion of it in her song "Flawless"! The highly acclaimed, provocative New York Times bestseller from the award-winning author of Americanah.

In this personal, eloquently-argued essay — adapted from the much-admired TEDx talk of the same name — Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author's exploration of what it means to be a woman now — and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

This little book, a modified version of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 2012 TEDx talk, is a goldmine. She spells out fantastic examples of the treatment of women and men without screaming or crying. In other words, it felt like something a man or woman could read without getting defensive! We still walk a fine line when it comes to the word 'feminist' and she expands upon this when calling herself a Happy African Feminist Who Does Not Hate Men And Who Likes To Wear Lip Gloss And High Heels For Herself And Not For Men. And my favorite thought provoking point she makes: "Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture." This 48 page book is not only completely relevant as we near the end of 2017, but critical for both women and men all around the world.

"I know a family who have a son and a daughter, both of whom are brilliant at school, who are wonderful, lovely children. When the boy is hungry, the parents say to the girl “Go and cook Indomie noodles for your brother.” Now the daughter doesn’t particularly like to cook Indomie noodles, but she’s a girl, and so she has to." I hadn't realized that this was basically Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TedTalk, but I'm glad I took the time to listen to it. It's a good introduction to feminism 101 and what it means to truly see women as equals. The author points out examples of sexism - such as expecting women to cook and men to pay for dinner - and how it hurts us as a society. It's also such a relief to hear that there is hope and there are things that we can do to truly reach gender equality. This is an uplifting and short book that focuses on important aspects of feminism and cultural change.

A quick read that is powerful and makes a compelling argument – while women certainly have many more opportunities today than throughout much of history, we still have much work to do in the fight for gender equality!

It's inspiring. It truly shows life of a woman in 21st century and it doesn't make the truth pretty which i think is on point. I've read this book i think 4 times so far and her speech listened to at least 5 times. I almost know every thing it's going to say. I truly believe that with more people who read this and understand that it isn't fiction some things could significantly change. I would give a 100 if i could. ( excuse my grammar english isn't my first language)

I borrowed this from the library and now I'm buying my own copy so I can underline some passages and put it on the shelf for my six-year-old to find one day. Adichie succinctly highlights so many of the same issues I have about gender-based expectations.

This book so clearly and beautifully lays out how to be a feminist in this new intersectional wave. It's about time the world finally recognizes non-white women and toxic masculinity and this book draws you in with conversation and beautiful prose. She makes you proud to love yourself and others.

Chimamanda Adichie is an amazing voice of grace and beauty. Beyoncé "sampled" some of this in her hit "Flawless." It is a quick and wonderful read.
