“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.

“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.

I am that girl.

I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.

I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery.

Synopsis

The New York Times bestselling story of a friendship frozen between life and death

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in fragile bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the thinnest. But then Cassie suffers the ultimate loss-her life-and Lia is left behind, haunted by her friend's memory and racked with guilt for not being able to help save her. In her most powerfully moving novel since Speak, award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia's struggle, her painful path to recovery, and her desperate attempts to hold on to the most important thing of all: hope.

as a fan of Anderson, Wintergirls is my favorite novel of hers. Anderson takes us into realm of eating disorders, the endless cycle of self-hatred. for some the only way out is death.

Excellent. Beautifully written. And sad - I felt so bad for Lia. I can't say the book allowed me to fully understand girls with anorexia/bulimia. I should say that I am not a Young Adult, the group this book is written for, but rather a Middle-Aged one. But I do remember something of my teen years, and can relate somewhat to her feeling that no one saw her, or listened to her. I can relate to the loss of her best friend, and the difficulty of dealing with the death of someone your own age. I don't know if the book helps girls like Lia to overcome their problems, or if it scares them into trying to get "well", which I assume is its goal. But it is a true, moving story which is captivating and educational. The only thing I didn't like about it was its neat and tidy ending, but I suppose it was necessary for the message.

If I were still teaching, I would have multiple copies of this on my classroom shelves. Laurie Halse Anderson has become a favorite YA author amongst both adults and teens alike, and with excellent reason. Her characters are those teens--especially girls--can understand, girls who are survivors of others' crimes or their own malicious webs, girls who develop their strength through the pages, through their own words. If I have one criticism of Wintergirls (and some of her other "issue" books), it's that Anderson has a tendency to wrap her characters' problems up a little too neatly in the end. But because of the brilliance of the writing--and because otherwise, such books could go on forever--I'll overlook that. Wintergirls is the best Laurie Halse Anderson book I've read since Speak.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. It is one of my favorite books of all time!!!! Wintergirls is about a girl struggling with an eating disorder. When I read this book I found myself as Lia. I felt as though Laurie (the author) painted this amazing world into my head full of the truth about losing a best friend and losing my life. I think that this book holds millions of truths and EVERYONE should read and discover what Lia's story has to say!!!!

Written in the same poetic and emotional style of "Speak", "Wintergirls" is an intense journey into the mind of Lia, a girl who struggles with anorexia. Laurie Halse Anderson did an amazing job with this novel. Not only is this novel hauntingly beautiful, it truly describes the inner battles that someone with an eating disorder and mental illness goes through. I highly, highly recommend this book. It is sure not to disappoint.
