Author Robert Ulanowicz, a "theoretical ecologist," writes about the process of development in natural systems, an "ascendency" in ecosystems. Instead of a Darwinist approach to evolution, Ulanowicz believes that a much more mathematically structured pattern is the preferred mode for system development. This book is fascinating even for non-specialists. There are schematics, matrix and vector operationss, and a BASIC program to calculate information indices.
