If you had told me a week ago that
Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip ? Confessions of a Cynical Waiter would be getting this much media attention, I would have told you to seek the attention of a psychiatrist who was heavy-handed dispensing the benzodiazepines. But, thanks to luck and an excellent publicist, I've been fortunate to get press coverage many first-time authors only dream about. I consider myself very fortunate. I'd also like to thank my girlfriend for the unwavering support she's given me over the past couple of whirlwind days. I've been too busy to take care of myself properly ? but she's made sure I've stayed grounded, fed, and didn't have spinach in my teeth on national T.V. Thanks, babe!
Of course, people want to know what it's like to be an individual caught up in this kind of media storm. First of all, it's been fun, fun, fun. I've been fortunate enough to meet some interesting people. And, since this is my last entry for the Powell's Book's blog this week, I'd thought I'd share two vignettes from my media funfest.
First off, all the reporters who've interviewed me have been very cool. But I was very impressed with Matt Lauer. After seeing him in action, I realized why he's paid the big bucks. But the joke he shared with me after the interview was priceless.
MATT LAUER: Thanks, Steve. The interview was fun.
ME: Thanks for having me!
MATT LAUER: One thing, though.
ME: What?
MATT LAUER: The cameraman told me that he spat on your seat just before you sat down!
I cracked up laughing. The perfect joke after talking about waiters spitting in the food!
And last, but not least, today I had an interview with Good Day New York over at Fox News. As I was waiting in the green room, sipping coffee and nibbling on a bagel chip, Buzz Aldrin walked into the room. Buzz Aldrin! After I got over my shock I stood up, extended my hand, and said, "It's an honor to meet you, sir." Only twelve human beings in the history of our species have walked on the lunar surface. I got to shake hands with the second man who did it! Kind of keeps things in perspective ? don't it?
Many thanks to Powell's for letting me guest blog this week! It's been a wild ride and I've been "over the moon" having a good time. Thanks for letting me share some stories with you.
