Like many classic hardboiled mysteries, Daren King's new chapter book opens in the hallway outside of a dusty, run-down detective agency. The difference here is that the detective is Sensible Hare, and the story is filled with silliness, kung-fu ears, and ghostly hats. There is mystery: a beautiful rabbit is missing a suitcase full of carrots. There is romance: that same lovely rabbit, Mazy. There is friendship: Ottoman Otter wants nothing but the best for his friend Sensible Hare. There are villains: so many foolish bad guys. David Roberts's illustrations, at times reminiscent of Edward Gorey, are the perfect compliment to the absurdity. But what really sets Sensible Hare apart is the sheer fun of reading it. There are quirky details and action-packed sequences that make you laugh and want to read them aloud to everyone nearby. Sensible Hare isn't very sensible, but he is immensely entertaining. You won't want to miss this book!
