For holiday giving, I highly recommended Amy Krouse Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. This book is a memoir, yes, but it's written as an encyclopedia of moments, objects, and memories in Rosenthal's life. I've always been attracted to books of lists. And I love poetry that makes beauty out of the mundane. Rosenthal's book is filled with beautiful and personal trivia. And, oh, is she funny. You'll laugh at least 50 times while reading this book. So, yes, Rosenthal writes like a standup comedian performs. And she'll knock you over with a moment of such crystalline insight that you'll have to shut the book to compose yourself.
Buy the thing for all of your friends. They'll love you for it. It will make them realize how smart and funny you think they are because you bought them a book that is so smart and funny.
