Extremely well-written with vivid characters and moments which kept me up way past when I wanted to go to sleep so that I could finish a chapter or find a stopping point for the night. If not for sleep, I would've read in one sitting.

5 isn't high enough... Who needs vampires when you can read about human beings in a war in the bush living in "hell". Vampires can't begin to compare with a story about humans killing each other during a war that didn't make sense. This powerful novel will get under your skin and stay there.

Matterhorn is a book about the war in Vietnam that takes the reader into the jungle with an M16 in hand. It manages to avoid the political implications of that war while offering a good look at the daily life of a soldier in that conflict. The author doesn't shy away from the realities of jungle warfare or the frustration felt for the REMFs (the brass back in comfortable billets far from the front lines who are making the operational decisions). This certainly isn't a beach book; it can be uncomfortable reading at times. But it's a book that once started, will be hard to put down.

The best way to understand and appreciate the insanity of war and of the so-called leaders who deliberately put others in harms way is to experience it yourself. The next best way is to read a book that is so realistic and immersive that it makes you believe you are there while you are reading it. This book is amazing. You will never think about Vietnam or war or military leaders the same way again. These days, we are all about honoring the troops while questioning the war we put them in. Back in the '70s, we didn't seem to see that distinction as clearly. But after you've lived with the troops, been put in impossible positions and asked to do impossible things -- which you will when reading "Matterhorn" -- you'll realize how misguided out attitudes to returning soldiers were in the Vietnam era and you'll wonder how anyone could return from such an experience WITHOUT PTSD.

A great blend of authenticity coupled with excellent writing to keep the reader's interest. A very enjoyable and well considered book. Highly recommended.

I grew up watching this war on the nightly news with all the body counts. Karl Marlantes explains what happened over there in a way that I am prouder than ever of the sacifice they endured for our country, and thankful that I was not yet of age to be sent there.

Not only is this the best book I read in 2011, it's the best book I've read in a very long time. It's devastating and violent, but just so good. I suppose you could call it a coming of age story about (very) young men in the midst of a war, but you could also call it an expose of what happens behind the scenes in a war where politics is being played with young lives. I was not around duing the Vietnam war but from what I know about the era this is a very realistic picture. It is difficult to read, but worth it!

A good book written as Vietnam is beginning to fade from our collective memories as things do in our society. The once young veterans grow older with many now in their 60s and 70s, The times were different and this war was so different than those before or after. Matterhorn is a good read that will take you in-country and re-introduce you to those times.

A gripping and yet utterly disquiting read. A true look at the frailties and resiliance of the human condition. By far the best Viatnam War novel I have ever read, and my favorite book this year.

Should be required reading for those who are considering a career in the military. I don't say that intent on convincing anyone to not join the military but, instead, I see this tale (which is likely more autobiographical than fictional) as a means of fully informing people about the ways of the military. The ways that aren't shown on the TV ads and brochures. This story is harrowing, perhaps like no other book I've ever read. The suffering and struggles of these Marines is worse than all the stories I've heard from friends and acquaintences who served in Vietnam. Their miseries in the field likely meant that the broken down, makeshift bars and whores behind the lines seem acceptable in comparison. Marlantes has written a nonfiction book about war and the military. I can't wait to read it while at the same time I'm dreading it. If it's more frank and honest than this novel it will be a difficult read.

As a sometimes reader of nonfiction, I tend to avoid hyper-realistic novels. I initially picked up Matterhorn b/c it was part of Powell's Indiespensible series, but I found myself plowing through the (long) book in an absorbed and fairly rapid fashion. There are no laughs here; maybe a sadistic chuckle, perhaps a cracked smile. Another reason I'm surprised how highly I'd recommend the book. The "visceral"-type adjectives used in comments above are certainly accurate. For me, however, Mr. Marlantes did more than any other author I've read to illuminate the contradictory cocktail that is war (esp. Vietnam): tension and boredom, bigotry and bravery, localized brilliance and over-arching stupidity... For someone who has never served his country, much less in combat, Matterhorn was and is a (never heavy-handed) reminder of the need to separate one's politics/ views on a conflict and those who symbolize it, from those (good and bad) carrying out their duties.

An amazing book that draws you in as soon as you start to read. The characters are so finely written that you feel that you know them and have a personal interest in their lives. Gritty, intense, brutal and honest. A great book that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.
