Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Publisher Comments

Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility.

All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley — a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry's room is a closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years.

But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry — and anyone who reads about him — will find unforgettable.

For it's there that he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic in everything from classes to meals, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him...if Harry can survive the encounter.

Review

"[T]he rapturous reception of the Harry Potter books is heartening, because J.K. Rowling is a literary artist, and these three books possess more imaginative life than the majority of novels that are published in this country in any given year. They are full of marvelous invention and humor and fun, but they have more than that." Lee Siegel, The New Republic (read the entire New Republic review here)

Review

"A wonderful first novel....Harry is destined for greatness....Much like Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling has a gift for keeping the emotions, fears, and triumphs of her characters on a human scale, even while the supernatural is popping out all over." Michael Winerip, The New York Times Book Review

Review

"Readers are in for a delightful romp with this debut from a British author who dances in the footsteps of P.L. Travers and Roald Dahl." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Review

"Obviously, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone should make any modern 11-year-old a very happy reader. The novel moves quickly, packs in everything from a boa constrictor that winks to a melancholy Zen-spouting centaur to an owl postal system, and ends with a scary surprise." Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World

Review

"This hugely enjoyable fantasy is filled with imaginative details, from oddly flavored jelly beans to dragons' eggs hatched on the hearth. It's slanted toward action-oriented readers, who will find that Briticisms meld with all the other wonders of magic school." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"A charming, imaginative, magical confection of a novel." The Boston Globe

Review

"Rowling's wonderful ability to put a fantastic spin on sports, student rivalry, and eccentric faculty contributes to the humor, charm, and, well, delight of her utterly captivating story." Booklist, starred review

Review

"Harry himself is the perfect confused and unassuming hero, whom trouble follows like a wizard's familiar. After reading this entrancing fantasy, readers will be convinced that they, too, could take the train to Hogwarts School, if only they could find Platform Nine and Three Quarters at the King's Cross Station." School Library Journal, starred review

Synopsis

Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches.

About the Author

J.K. Rowling was a struggling single mother when she wrote the beginnings of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on scraps of paper at a local cafe. But her efforts were soon rewarded with an award from the Scottish Arts Council enabling her to finish the novel. I loved exploring the mystical world of Harry Potter. I felt scared, excited, and relieved for Harry and his friends all at different times. Rowling magically blended together everything that you want from a book in a captivating and compelling tale. This fantasy is extremely believable due to the fact that Hogwarts is like any other middle school; there always will be teachers you don't particularly enjoy (Professor Snape), rivalries between fellow students (Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy), tons of homework, and great friendships (Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger). This book is truly the work of a genius.

Perhaps it's because the book is not altogether too big, and the characters involved me, but I certainly enjoyed the read. The premise was fun, the introduction to Hogwarts was fun, the Sorting Hat was fun...easy to like whether adult or child. Good stuff. Book Season = Autumn (start of school)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling is the first uplifting and venturous novel in the Harry Potter series; taking place at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this fantasy, Harry Potter and his new friends journey through Hogwarts, explore the wizarding world from his perspective, meeting plenty of foes, and making trouble all over. Rowling creates a wondrous world every reader will wish to be a part of, and creates very descriptively, the characters that you will fall in love with. This book contains everything a suspense lover is looking for; it’s a favorite because of all the adventure and magic contained within. You will be glued onto page after page, until the very end.

This book and the rest of this series started my reading craze when I was just a little girl. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is amazing as the start of a series that will live in the minds of the people that have read them as long as they live, just like me.

These were great books for someone who can believe in them. Very well written...alot of detail which enabled the reader to really visualize what was happening. Good story line...very easy to follow. Each character was described in excellent detail so you could really picture them in your mind. I would recommend this to anyone.

Magic, mystery and all around great fun, makes Harry Potter a brilliant book to read. This book gives us a new look on the view of magic, wizards and witches. This story will pull every emotion out of you as you read. From love, to hate, to humourous and to sadness, and much more. Don't let the slow begining fool you. Just keep reading and, you too, wil go to Hogwarts and learn about the curious world of magic.

In my life time, I have never seen a book cause such controversy. However, at the same time, re-establishing a love to read in our younger generations. With the way our younger generation has embraced TV, video games, and pc’s there is a real need to prove to new reader’s, the rationale why they should pick up a book and spend a few hours reading, instead of a couple hours cramming it into a, never as good, movie or TV show. J.K. Rowling has done what every writer strives for. So this is why Harry Potter’s first book gets my vote.

It speaks for itself: This book was the catalyst for a book series that has sold more than 400 million copies, has been translated into 67 languages, and the last four books have consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history. The series as a whole should win the prize as the best of the decade. How many out there in "book are us" land remember knowing the exact date the next in the series would hit the shelves?

One of the best books of the decade! Easy to read, yet entertaining and enlightening for both young and old. This title kicks of an amazing 7-book adventure, and though Book 4 may be my favorite in the series, you couldn't have a Book 4 without a Book 1. Bonus: this is the easiest book to give as a gift, it works for almost everyone!

If you have trouble getting your kids to read, or have trouble your self i would recommend reading the Harry Potter series. Not only are they a great series but they encourage imagination. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is the first book i completely loved. When I was in 5th grade i had a lower reading level than my actual grade. I was first introduced to Harry Potter in the 5th grade, and since the first page i read, I have loved reading. after reading Harry Potter 1, i completed the rest of the books in the series that were out, and began reading many various books. I owe my love of reading to Harry Potter.

I was very skeptical of the Harry Potter series at first because it deals with wizards and magic, which sounded corny, but everyone I' talked to who'd read it loved it. When I was presented with the option of reading it as an outside reading book for English, I decided I'd finally give the book a shot. I'm still only on the first book, but I absolutely love it and cannot put it down. It's really surprising to me that I'm into this book, especially since it's not actually written for people my age (I'm 18). Somehow, Rowling is able to make these seemingly simple books interesting to people in all walks of life. The first book is basically about a kid named Harry Potter who finds out that he is a wizard. He leaves his depressing life and begins to attend Hogwart's School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. There he begins to learn about magic, meets friends (and enemies), and tries to solve the mysteries of the world of magic he never knew. What I like about the book is that it’s short and easy yet it's still interesting. I like that Rowling constantly keeps a mystery or conflict going, unlike some other books I’ve read, so that I am continually engaged in the story. Sometimes, I’ve tried to guess what will at the end of a chapter, or guess how a conflict will end, but I’m usually wrong because of Rowling’s many twists. Also, if Rowling did not make the story as believable, I would have stopped reading it. What I mean by that is that Rowling creates a highly believable world of magic by using careful detail and a wonderful imagination. Rowling also scatters witty humor throughout the story which makes it even better. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone that can read. Even if it would not be your first choice, it’s worth it to pick it up when you have free time because it's entertaining but will not take long to read. As for the person who said that these books should be used as toilet paper, I'd like to know what kind of books you like to read....

These books are the most poorly written things I have ever read and should only be used as toilet paper. The writing level is that of a third grader, and the plot is incredibly unoriginal. I would not recommend this series to anybody with half a brain and an appreciation for GOOD literature.

I had the bad experience that I really didn't like the two movies I saw, which put me off reading the books for a long time. But I have to say the books are so much better, because you get so much more depth to the characters. You feel closer to them because a book is intimate, not just another huge special effects blockbuster, hollywood style. The books have soul! And this is where it all started. No one should miss out on this!

Harry Potter is definitely a classic. If you never read anything in your whole life, read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at least once. The series is phenomenal! It is unlike any "magic" book I've read in my childhood. Even adults would enjoy it! J.K. Rowling didn't just write a book---she wrote a masterpiece.
