Korean Barbecue at Home 50 Traditional Recipes to Entertain Family & Friends
by

This is a great cookbook and I highly recommend! The writing feels like a friendly conversation with great descriptions and explanations that all feels accessible. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and don't rely on you having cooked the dish before or being a skilled chef. The dishes are delicious and have really helped my family try some new things (& we have some very picky eaters).

Snow and Rose are sisters whose father disappears one day, along with their mom they are forced out of their home and must go live in the forest. Snow and Rose meet friends and have adventures as they explore their new world and ultimately solve the mystery of the forest. This book is a lovely fairytale full of beautiful imagery and illustrations. My whole family loved it.

It's Not the Stork!: A Book about Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends

My girls love this book. It explains really complicated stuff about bodies, development, pregnancy, etc, all in an easily digestible, non-judging and fun way. The drawings are great; cartoony and friendly. They helped my 4yo follow the conversation and my 8yo get comfortable with the topics. The first few times we read it both girls did a lot of "ew"ing but then the 8yo started asking her own questions, talking about her own body and on our next visit to Powell's asked for the next level up (It's So Amazing). Our 8yo now wants to give this to all her friends for their birthdays.

The Princess in Black and the Bathtime Battle

In book 7 of the series we're introduced to new heroes (teased in book 6) and they all work together with The Princesses in Black & Blankets & The Goat Avenger to solve yet another monster problem. The Princess in Black series is always silly and fun to read together as a family or for older kids to read on their own. Every time we get the next book in the series my girls ask when the next one will be available, they cannot wait.

We LOVE Kitty! I bought this for my cat obsessed 6 year old. She read it repeatedly and asked for the rest of the series right away. She loves talking about Kitty and her adventures with her cat friends. The story is fun, engaging, and has inspired lots of adventurous play at our house. My daughter is so into the series she insisted we get it for her cousin's 5th birthday - She and younger brother also love Kitty now and all of them are asking for the next book in the series.

Percy Jackson 01 Lightning Thief

Absolutely love this book. My husband has read the whole series and loved it. I am now reading this for the first time to my 9 year old daughter who is entranced by it. We both love the story - a 12 year old boy finds out that the Greek gods are real and he is the son of 1, he's then sent on a quest to find the stolen master lighting bolt while the monsters of Greek mythology chase him and his cohorts. I also love it because 1) Rick Riordan does a great job incorporating the Greek myths into modern day while still remaining true to the original myths & 2) Percy and the other demi-god children have diverse abilities that actually give them special abilities. I've never read a story, for kids or adults, where different abilities were presented as a positive. They're usually an obstacle to overcome but for Percy and the other demi-gods it's what makes them special. Now that I've seen it in writing I'm wondering why more authors aren't doing this. My 9 year old loves it because it is an exciting story about kids on a quest. She has been recommending it to everyone we've spoken to since we started it.

The 3rd book in the Red Queen series. In King's Cage, Mare is a prisoner of Maven's, brought back to Norta with no idea what her fate holds while her friends and allies to to figure out how to free her without getting themselves killed. King's Cage has a very different feel from the first 2 but still keeps the excitement and intrigue.

The 2nd book in the Red Queen series - Victoria Aveyard has created a clever and engaging universe full of excitement. In Glass Sword, Mare's world has become far more dangerous as she tried to keep away from her former fiancé and friend, Maven, and find others like her (who Maven is also hunting). Glass Sword holds up to the excitement and intrigue of Red Queen, I couldn't put it down.

Red Queen Collector's Edition
by
Victoria Aveyard
JWallis
, November 27, 2020
Victoria Aveyard creates a clever and engaging world in the Red Queen series. In Mare's world there are 2 types of people; The first are powerful "Silvers" who have special abilities and silver blood, the second are "Reds", ordinary people (with ordinary red blood). In addition to being subservient to the ruling Silvers, the Reds must also fight in a long standing war between the 2 main kingdoms. All Reds without a job at 18 are conscripted to the army, many dying or coming home severely wounded. Mare is resigned to her fate until events unfold that force her to take action and alter the course of not just her fate, but her entire kingdom. Aveyard not only creates an enticing and thrilling world but I also love the character dialog, interactions, and development as the series progresses. The characters are not perfectly good or bad, or perfect in general, which makes the story so much more compelling. I highly enjoyed the series and recommend getting all 4 books at once so you don't have to wait.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

I really wanted to love this book and contributed to the crowdfunding when it first came out. But as we've gone through it over the years I have a harder and harder time with who was chosen to be featured. While some of the women chosen are fantastic (Frida Kahlo, Simone Biles, Malala Yousafzai!), others are intensely problematic - which is glossed over. As an example, Coco Chanel is featured and painted in a lovely light, despite being a known Nazi sympathizer. There are plenty of other great women from the fashion world that could have been used. This book is a great idea and I love the sentiment behind it but we use it more to talk about how you have to be careful of where your information is coming from when learning than to actually learn about strong, courageous women. Buy from the Little Leaders/Dreamer/etc series by Vashti Harrison instead.

The Wedding Procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle and Who Was in It
by
Carl Sandburg

This has been a childhood favorite of mine since before I can remember. All of my girls love it too (& my husband regularly steers them toward this book at reading time). The story is pretty simple and straight forward, it tells how the Ragdoll & Broom Handle fell in love on the first few pages and then the story of their wedding and grand (& very silly) procession. The illustrations are delightful too.

It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Sex, and Sexual Health
by
Robie H. Harris

, December 30, 2019
This book has been great for my very curious 8 year old. She devoured "It's So Amazing!" and was ready for more details, "Its Perfectly Normal" re-explains these topics (and more) and adds more detail for the older audience. The drawings are slightly more sophisticated while still not being too much for the younger age range. "Its Perfectly Normal" also helped me start / continue some conversations with her about bodies, sexuality, etc. She hasn't lived with us her whole life and had been exposed to some negative or incorrect thoughts about bodies and sexuality. This book addresses topics like homosexuality neutrally and as everyday topics that I can then continue with her on a more specific and personal level. It talks about bodies and development without shamefulness but as something that really is just perfectly normal. We love this series!

Lunar Chronicles Boxed Set Cinder Scarlet Cress Fairest Stars Above Winter
by
Marissa Meyer

, November 18, 2019
This series is great, it is a unique and entertaining YA series that combines re-imagined fairytales with sci-fi, star-crossed lovers, & reluctant heroes. While the plot continues & builds through out the entire series each book also involves a new re-imagined fairytale. When I first read summaries of the series I thought this sounded a bit heavy handed but after reading them I was impressed. It doesn't feel like the writing experiment that I thought it would be. I also love the different characters Meyer brings to life, they all feel fully flushed out and the group has an entertaining and funny dynamic. The series is so fast paced and because it's YA it is a very fast read so I quickly realized I needed to have all of the books in hand before I was even 1/2 way done with the first.

Fairest
by
Marissa Meyer
JWallis
, November 18, 2019
Fairest is a prequel to Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles. According to Marissa Meyer's this is meant to be read after Winter - I agree,I do not recommend reading this until you have finished the series, it is a good stand alone book but has spoilers to the series. I did have a harder time getting into this book than with The Lunar Chronicles, Levana is a sad character with a sad backstory. Lunar court is filled with cruel, power hungry, awful people; Levana's parents and older sister included. Fairest essentially follows Levana as she changes from a sad, abused, child with no empathy to a Machiavellian like ruler who cannot understand why people don't like how she treats them. It felt like being inside the mind of a sociopath. Despite that, the story was still gripping and kept all the same great story development and intrigue of The Lunar Chronicles.

Fairest

Winter (Lunar Chronicles #4)
by

, November 18, 2019
Winter is the final book of the Lunar Chronicles, incorporating the Snow White story into the wrap up of the series' battle over the universe (or at least the Earth & the Moon). Winter is just as action packed and intense as the other 3 books of the series and, as in the others, lots goes wrong that Cinder, Scarlett, Cress, Thorne, Iko, Wolf, and now Winter have to figure out. Unlike the other 3 books, Winter takes place almost entirely on Luna - Queen Levana's domain. The final book gets to explore the politics and inner workings of Luna a lot more, which the other 3 books only elude to. Winter is the step-daughter of Queen Levana, adored by the people for her kindness and beauty, hated by her step-mother and some of the court. Winter is considered off and weak by Queen Levana but Winter isn't so simple to figure out. Cinder must figure out how to save Scarlet, Prince Kai, and all of earth from Queen Levana, all while continuing to uncover secrets from the past and struggling to control her own future. If, like me, you find yourself wanting more after the finale try out Fairest - it is Marissa Meyer's prequel and tells the story of Queen Levana prior to the Lunar Chronicles.

Lunar Chronicles 03 Cress

Book 3 of the Lunar Chronicles develops the relationship and storyline of Cress & Thorne and incorporates in the re-imagined storyline of Rapunzel. Cress does a good job of continuing the formula of adding a new re-imagined fairytale into each book and keeping the story going at a quick pace. In Cress, there is a lot more tying together of the different story lines and more plot points are revealed. While I still really liked this book, it's my least favorite of the series. Cress is timid, sheltered (literally living in a satellite), incredibly smart, and resourceful. The rest of the characters stage a daring escape for her but, of course, it doesn't go fully to plan. The group is fractured and must figure out how to get back to each other while hiding out from both Earth & Lunar authorities.

Scarlet is the 2nd book in Marissa Meyer's Cinder collection (The Lunar Chronicles). Cinder's story (& the Cinderella re-imagining) continues in addition to the introduction of a new set of characters and a new re-imagined fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood. I love the way Marissa Meyer blends the 2 fairytales in Scarlet (& the rest of the series), it is just as compelling and captivating as Cinder.. Scarlet is my favorite character and my favorite book of the series. Scarlet is a smart, independent young woman whose grandmother has gone missing and the authorities don't seem to care. Scarlet is desperate to find her grandmother, so much so that she is willing to (reluctantly) accept help from a stranger she meets in town - appropriately named Wolf.

Wonderful re-imagining of the Cinderella story incorporating sci-fi, reluctant hero storyline & a little star-crossed lovers thrown in. Cinder is a compelling character who really stands on her own - she doesn't feel like a faux Cinderella or Cinderella light, Marissa Meyer could have easily tweaked the story line enough to remove the Cinderella elements but her incorporation or re-imagination of them are so smart and interesting (& carry on through the rest of the series in such engrossing ways). Cinder is a brilliant mechanic in far future New Beijing. Like Cinderella she has a horrid "step" mother and 2 step sisters, 1 who is cruel like her mother and 1 who adores Cinder and treats her with kindness. Cinder herself is part cyborg, which makes her not only a pariah in New Beijing but also her step mother's property rather than an autonomous person. As the story progresses Cinder's world falls apart in more than 1 way but she has to think quickly and choose between saving herself and doing what she thinks is right. It's so easy to get caught up in the mystery and drama of the world Cinder finds herself in and the rest of the series keeps up the drama, mystery, and intrigue.

Akata Warrior is the 2nd (final?) book in the Akata Witch series. Nnedi Okorafor keeps up the pace and skilled writing the delivered in Akata Witch with more excitement and challenges for Sunny and her friends. The Akata Witch series is so smartly written that I am really sad that Akata Warrior appears to be the conclusion. I could read 10 more in the series easily. Nnedi Okorafor's writing is so string and compelling it easily stands out from the group of "teen witches and wizards" in the YA genre (& really, any genre you put it in). I love her writing, character and storyline development so much I've already put all Nnedi Okorafor's other book on my wishlist and a few gift lists.

Nnedi Okorafor creates an amazing world that feels real, multidimensional, and magical all together. She incorporates African mythology in a way that feels smart and seamless. She also does it in such a way that if you are like me and don't know a lot of African mythology you don't miss anything but it doesn't feel like she's over explaining.

if you like Sherlock Holmes and books that look at old stories in new ways I recommend A Study in Charlotte. I found this to be a really fun and readable YA series about the teen descendants of Holmes & Watson who find themselves at the same private high school on the East Coast. This book is a fast and easy reading, the characters are interesting and engaging. I picked up the 2nd book (in what is currently a series of 4) as soon as I finished.

This book is so cute! Uni is a unicorn who believes that little girls are real, even though her friends and parents don't. It's such an adorable concept, having a mythical creature believing in little girls, my 5 year old loves it (& so do her 7 & 8 year old sisters)! The artwork is also very pretty and engaging - which really makes or breaks books for us.

Stunning artwork, I have honestly thought about buying another book just to hang some of the pictures up, they are so beautiful and really make you feel like you are floating with Julián. The story itself is also very sweet even though there are not a lot of words in this book. A few pages are just pictures but seriously, they speak for themselves and we spend as much time staring at the pictures as we do on the pages with words. My sister bought this for my youngest (5th) birthday because she's obsessed with mermaids and it was one of her favorite presents. It's often the book she chooses to take on car rides, read with friends, etc.

So cute! We stumbled upon this book while browsing and ended up reading the whole thing to my 8, 7, & 5 year old girls. They loved the rhyming verse (reminded us of Thelma The Unicorn), the beautiful pictures and the story itself. As an adult, I loved that this starts out as a traditional sounding fairy tale but quickly takes a non-traditional turn; it's not just that the Prince isn't into Princesses but that he and the Knight are equally brave and work together, rather than 1 of them still taking on the "damsel" in distress role. When I picked it up there was a part of me that wondered if this book would be trying too hard but it felt really natural and well thought out. All of the diversity represented in the book feels authentic. I will definitely be buying this for my niece and nephew as well.

My girls (5 & 3) call this book "Pony Farts" and they LOVE IT! The illustrations are great, we love the details and diversity of the characters. I also love the messages in the book, 1) that Princess Pinecone makes the best of initially not getting exactly what she wanted (instead of a real warrior horse she gets a goofy pony) & 2) that Princess Pinecone and all the other warriors can be tough and show their soft side at the same time.

My 8 & 4 year olds love this book. It explains really complicated stuff about bodies, development, pregnancy, etc, all in an easily digestible, non-judging and fun way. The drawings are great; cartoony and friendly, they helped my 4yo follow the conversation and my 8yo get comfortable with the topics. The first few times we read it both girls did a lot of "ew"ing but then the 8yo started asking her own questions, talking about her own body and on our next visit to Powell's asked for the next level up (Its Perfectly Normal). Our 8yo now wants to give this to all her friends for their birthdays.

This is a great book for anyone considering adoption or wanting to know more about the subject. Lois Ruskai Melina has information about all types of adoption (international, infant, older child, disabled, etc), she speaks about her own experiences as an adoptive parent in addition to obviously doing a lot of research for the book and provides a great list of additional resources on all of the subjects covered. This book is a fast read and gives broad brush strokes about the different types of adoption, it is a great resource for anyone still in the beginning phases (or just thinking about it as an option) who wants more information on the types of adoption to determine which option(s) may be right for them.

Attaching in Adoption Practical Tools for Todays Parents

My husband and I were recommended this book by our adoption agency (while in the process of getting our foster license). After reading this I am so glad they did, I found this to be a terrific resource - it speaks plainly, honestly and at times bluntly (but still positively) about the different types of attachment issues children from the foster system may experience/exhibit and various techniques adults can use to help children with these issues. It gives great information but isn't overwhelming, overly informative or overly technical. Deborah Gray sites many examples from her years of therapeutic work with foster and adoptive families, which helped make abstract issues relate-able and easy to understand. She is also realistic, making it clear that seeking professional help is often the best option, that parents need to have realistic expectations, that kids will make progress but also backslide, etc. I feel much more prepared to identify and address future issues with my children after reading this book, highly recommended.
