Mooallem wrote this book for his young daughter, making the often overwhelming topics of extinction and climate change feel much more approachable. He spans decades (sometimes centuries) with his extensive research and fieldwork and, while you certainly have learned something by the end, you feel much more as though you've gone on this "sometimes dismaying, weirdly reassuring" journey with Jon and his daughter. I first read this book in seventh grade at the urging of my English teacher, and just read it again for the second time. It has saved my life both times. Hall weaves a thrilling, mind-blowing, bending, and boggling tale, asking you to suspend every belief you have about reality.
