I read many appalling things in this book; my mouth literally dropped open a few times. I found myself often considering how cruel people can be, in all kinds of situations. But, I laughed, too - out loud. I found the dialect sticking with me throughout the day; I would stand at the sink doing dishes and "hear" Minny and Aibileen. I do not pretend to be fluent in any Southern dialect but thought the author did a fine job of keeping it consistent. I'm sure the situation was much, much worse for many at that time but that this offered a good balance of the good and the bad within individuals trying to co-exist. I think the book has done a good service. Also, it was well-written and flowed impeccably well. The book did what I expect any good book to do: it entertained me while running me through a gamut of emotions.

I'm not even done with this book (still have a little over 100 pages left) but it is such a good book. Stockett did such a good job of displaying the emotions that these people had to have felt back then. Excellent read!!

The birth of yet another American classic. I fell in love with this book ~ with the characters, the language, the story, the writer. Stockett's skill at telling a story so historically and socially complex is stunning. I loved every minute of this page-turner. Telling the tale of both the oppressed and their oppressors with such comfort and intelligence is not an easy task. She does it all without effort, and we are both appalled and inspired. It is the story of race and gender in the American 1960s, and it's the story of a household. This one's a keeper. I promise you won't be disappointed.

If you thought there was nothing more to say about race discrimination, read this book. "The Help" paints a new and vivid picture that rings true with everyday life details that are shocking to us now, but even more moving because the setting is the 1960's, relatively recent history.

Very enlightening history of the south & the treatment of the hired help. Is hard for me to believe anyone could ever think this is the way to treat any other person, regardless of race. Haven't seen the movie yet, but look forward to seeing how closely it follows the book.

It's the fictional story of a young white woman who sets out to write a book about African-American maids' thoughts on their white employers .... searing, amusing, shocking, and one of the most delightful books ever. Full of laughs and cheers. Extremely highly recommended!

Stockett has raised people's awareness of the racial issues of the 1960s in the writing of this book. The story may not be entirely accurate (after all, it is classed as fiction), but those of us who have heard similar stories from older Black women, know there are kernels of truth running throughout the book.

A book that can cause me to cry is an amazing read. This one had it all -- and I wept. Perhaps because I grew up in the south with black maids, or perhaps it's just because I am aware of people besides myself! Either way, the hype about this book is true, it IS that good. And believe it or not, the movie was well done also. They GOT the characters. Bottom line, great read. Grab it now.

As a white woman who grew up in the South in the 60s and 70s, this book rang so true for me. The circumstances described, while often over the top, depict a reality that was inescapably true. The story is well told and the characters vivid. It closely resembles my own home town where nice girls were expected to behave pretty much as the book describes, and everyone I knew had Help, including us. Wonderful to have this out in the world.

"The Help" captured my attention at once. I found it nearly impossible to put down once I started reading it. Although I did not live through the time and place of the novel's setting, Stockett's prose and, in particular, her well-drawn characters clearly rang the bell of Truth, resonating deeply in me. This was a critical time in our nation's history for civil rights, and "The Help" gives a voice to those who did live through it. Stockett's reference in the novel to Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" is a powerful reminder of the deeply ingrained racism that is part of the African-American Experience in America before the action in "The Help" takes place as well as a mirror of the present time. Stockett's novel moved me to examine myself and our current American culture. "The Help" should be required reading, as well as Elliot's "Invisible Man", in our public high school curriculum.

A wonderful book. I remember some of what took place during that time but I grew up in Michigan. Things in the south were definitely different. I enjoyed the story and how well it was written. One of the best books I have read in a long time. I didn't want the book to end. I just saw the movie tonight and really enjoyed that too, but the book is wonderful itself.

This book was so great and very heartwarming. It is a story that takes you back into the days when being black or white chose your rank in the world for you. Kathryn Stockett writes her story line about a young lady named Skeeter who didn't let color chose where you belong in the world through her eyes. As Skeeter embarks on her journey to become a writer she decides to write a book on what touches her heart and that is how the women referred to as "The Help" (colored maids) were treated and their own personal stories of their times being the maids of a crewel bunch of lady's that treated them wrong and some that were just plain ignorant. It's a MUST READ story. You'll fall in love with Skeeter and her heart as well as the women that help her tell their stories and you will laugh uncontrollably. I give it a 10 out of a score of 1-5, it was so awesome. So read it!!!

A refreshing twist on segregation, "The Help" brings to life the real stories of maids in the deep south. Stockett uses true memoirs from her childhood to base her characters on. The story is written from the perspective of a young white woman trying to make a way for herself in a culture dictated by societal standards. While the plot has been heard before, the humor, authenticity and brazen truth compose a new song to an old tune.

'The Help' is a wonderful read. You will learn to love these women as if they are your own family, and miss them dearly when the book is done. I have read several blog reviews on 'The Help', and there is some talk about the 'whiteness' of the author and storyline. Might I remind you this book is fictitious, although set in history. I highly recommend reading this book, and then comparing/contrasting it with Anne Moody's 'Coming of Age in Mississippi', a true account of an African American woman's upbringing during the turbulent South. Both books are inspiring and uplifting.

Took me right back to the 60s. I am the same age as those women but a Northerner. I remember the times and the turmoil. It was wonderful to get another perspective. Kathryn Stockett is a master at dialect and the feelings of the "help" (I assume.) A wonderful story with all the drama of the times and yet very easy to identify with all the characters.

I believe that this should be the best book of 2011 for many reasons. I love that it showed the inter-relationships between the maids and their employers, the emplyers relationships with each other (good and bad!) AND most of all how it made me realize that the women who actually raised the children (more often than not in some cases than their own parents) really loved and cared for the children left in their charge. This was such a funny and heart-warming story. The whole time I read it I kept thinking how it would make a great movie. I have yet to see the movie, but I heard it was great!

I grew up in this age and atmosphere. The book was dead on the money and I am glad others get a chance to see what prejudice is like. I was surprised when I went to the movie that situations I found offensive in the book were even more so when viewed. As an add on, I am caucasian.

This is a very good account about the relationships between white people and their black housekeepers in the 50's & 60's. I know because some of my family had help; both live in and daily. It was a very interesting time. Ms. Stockett does such a remarkable job, she must have known what she was talking about. Only then, could you have written such a true story. But you do not have to have lived it to enjoy this book. It is an easy, funny, yet sad at times, read. Best book I have read in a long time.

I had a Mammy when I was very young in Texas. She was big and fat and sweet and loving and I thought she was wonderful. But, she was the only black person I knew. The other people in my community, however, infected me with racism that, over time, was almost completely cured through experience. Occasionally, throughout my life some of those old ugly lessons would creep to the surface, remind me how determined bad ideas can be, snd demonstrate how badly they make us all feel. Memories, new insights and new lessons are still reverberating in my mind and heart as a result of reading this book. Sharing the perspective of the help has opened up a world of new lessons to learn. I am wondering how my Mammy could have loved me so much in such a hateful place.

The Help taught us about history, civility and how NOT to treat others. Then again, it showed us exactly how we should treat those we tend to take for granted. I laughed, I cried, I learned...isn't that what a good book should make us do?? :)

This is an excellent account of life in the '60's, depicting the gulf between the races, and the fact that many of the white people were truly not aware of it.

I first heard about the book when the movie was about to come out. It sounded intruiging, so I watched for it the next time I went to a store. Upon reading the synopsis of the book, I adjusted my grocery list and bought the book instead. Once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down and when I came to the end of the book, I found myself wanting more. What happened to the characters after the books were read by everyone? What was to become of the main character? I am waiting for a sequel, although I don't know if one is in the works. It is my understanding that this is the first book by this author. If that is so, she has taken the literary world by storm, and has a large following should she decide to write again. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a treasure of life in the South in the late 1950's to mid 1960's, a period of time when I was growing up, in the North. It certainly answers many questions about Southern culture that have eluded me since childhood. I consider it to be quite an interesting work.

"The Help" was by far the best book I read in 2011. Having been raised in the south, this book reminded me so much of stories I have grown up hearing about. The author really made the characters come to life and by the end of the book, I felt as if they were a part of my family and neighborhood.

The Help is an excellent book for many reasons. It has believable, compelling characters, a plot that kept my attention, and a setting that is realistic to the point of being scary. For those who don't recall what the american south was like at the beginning of the civil rights movement, it will be an eye-opener. I recommend it without reservation.

Normally I read suspense books (ie James Patterson, etc), so this is the first book of its type I've read in probably 20 years. Amazing! I grew up in the south, and Stockett really captured the essence of the 60s in the south. Also amazing to realize how far we've come as a country.

This book had my attention from the start, and I couldn't put it down. It was beautifully written. You can see the talent of the author when she masters changing different feelings and voices when stories change from character to character and their perspectives. Many women facing different tragedies and joys joined together. Each chapter revealed more of the character and had me wrapped up in feeling like I'd known them forever and that I always wanted to know them. The history of African-American maids was fascinating. It was also heartbreaking to know that racial tension existed not so long ago. I laughed and cried with this book. A book that brings a smile is worth a lot. What's worth more is when you finish and feel that you made a soul connection that will always remain in your memory. The Help has done all of that.

Being born in the late 1950s, I read this book and was so upset not with the "help" but the way the white ladies treated them as if they were dirty or inferior. The maids did EVERYTHING for them including raise their children and the arrogance of the white ladies made me ill. This book was really historical fiction and so well written! I hope that everyone reads this book or watches the movie to see just how cruel some white folk could be.

I saw the movie, The Help, and was immediately inspired to read the book because it definitely resonated with me having grown up in the south with black maids. I remember moving to CA in the forties when I was 9 or 10 and having a black person sit down next to me on the bus. I couldn't have been more shocked than if a being from outer space had sat there. If you want to know what the south was really before the civil rights movement from the point of view of blacks then this is an important book to read. I thank my parents for moving us out of there and providing a more multi-cultural existence which would have been hard to do in the Florida of those days. However, when I had to return to the south in 2001, specifically Mississippi this time, (the place where this story takes place) and live and work there for a couple of years, I was disappointed to see that there were still a lot of hardcore racist feelings not always "under" the surface. This book, I believe, portrays the feelings and lives of many of the black maids who worked for whites and often raised their children. If the book of the year is one that is going to stay with you and give you insight into another way of life then this is the book that did that for me in 2011.

The Help is a book that made me think twice and deeply about the state of Mississippi in the 1960's. I was completely carried away in this story. Stockett's descriptive writing and detailed character development left me wanting more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go on a journey back in time and see life through the eyes of African American maids and white ladies from privileged background. The Help will not disappoint.

I found myself unable to put this book down. I was immediately sucked into the world of south in the early 60's and the strict divisions between the world of the white people and the world of the black people . The way that Stockett was able to engage the reader in actually experiencing both sides of these worlds through the life of Skeeter and her liberal views and the resulting conflicts was brilliantly explored with a touch of humor and heart wrenching truths. The bold decision Skeeter makes to write of the lives of the black "help" and her success in actually convincing local black women to allow her to interview them leads into a fascinating story filled with both fear and hope.

Kathryn Stockett's novel, The Help, is intriguing on so many levels. The characters are genuine and engaging, the storyline is heart-wrenching and exciting, and the writing is lyrical and page turning. The themes and emotional turmoil portrayed in the not-that-distant setting of pre Civil Rights era Mississippi are still compelling and relevant in today's society. A great pick for an avid bibliophile or someone just looking for a great read, The Help is simply one of the best books around!

I started reading THE HELP this last summer because I wanted to read it before seeing the movie. Within the first few pages I was deeply engrossed and could hardly put it down. The characters were so well defined I could almost see and feel them. Although I didn't grow up in the south, I did grow up in the era the book was set in. It was almost too real. It helped me reflect on where our country was and where it is now, as well as how far we still have to go. It is an unforgettable book and as good as the movie was, the book is still my favorite.

Stockett's book is an terrific read on a challenging and difficult subject, yet overall she does it with grace, boldness, and sensitivity. I laughed, cried, and was outraged at times, but I could scarcely put it down. Not once did I regret reading it in its entirety. The author's southern origins gives her an authentic voice though limited at times by her own ethnicity, gender, and upbringing. I agree it took courage to portray the story but wonder if the perspectives of the African Americans she was presumably writing on behalf of are fully represented. Still "The Help" is a very good story and raises awareness of issues of injustice that still surface today. I look forward to other works by Stockett or others on this topic. Glad to see it made it onto our bookshelves

This book is also very humorous. Its a reminder of how we should make a stand for what we believe in and it doesn't have to be an irrational stand either. Its a must read... You'll love it!

I started this book way back in July while housesitting at a place with wonderful bookshelves and I have been waiting ever since to pick it back up again. I was immediately compelled by the story, mostly because of the voices of the three main characters and their honesty. I was captivated by the secrecy of the plot in the story, the history of civil rights int he 1960s South, and the bravery of the characters. After reading Stockett's reflection at the end, her own passion for the subjects she addresses really come alive throughout the rest of the book. The story takes on a whole new meaning. Applause for The Help- I really see why it's been flying off the shelves!

This book, on civil rights set in 1962 Jackson, Miss., is just as poignent today as it would have been in the '60s. In our current society race, inequality, and prejudism have become invisible - not eraced as we have hoped (and often are led to believe). I believe it to be just as important as "To Kill a Mockingbird" and is a must-read, especially now as many States in the continential 48 seem to be reverting back some 50 years in time. It is important to remember all we have fought for as a Union, for every citizen, lest we forget and restablish former 'abolished' ways. Women, for example, making the news for being jailed for having had miscarriages (in the South) is a HUGE sign that the Nation sit up and pay attention. We are once again on the brink - do we let equality slip back as something that has "passed over", or do we continue to see the wrongs people commit against each other with their flimsy lies of why they are right? Before I turn this into a thesis, I highly recommend this book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was an eye opening book that offered great insights to the Civil War Era. When I saw the movie was coming out I knew I had to read the book before seeing it, and I'm glad I did. I loved it.

While many have read this great story of the times in the early 60's-I tell you, it opened my eyes. I was age 10-12 when the story takes place and really had no idea this was going on in the south. I'm from the midwest (OHIO). So it really helped me understand what discrimination was and still is and how we have to move forward and end it forever.

This is a wonderfully thoughtful book. Having the different points of view on time in history from people actually there has made it more of an attention grabber. Funny, sad, everything a book should be.

These seductive, strong and varied Southern voices will stay with me for a long time. Beautifully written, this novel put me in the heart of racial discrimination and it was an eyeopener. I am still wondering if I would have been a "Skeeter" or a "Hilly" had I lived in that place at that time...

The Help flowed very well and kept me intrigued with every page. I stayed up late many nights just because I wanted to see what would happen! I loved learning a little about the history of Mississippi in the 60's, and thought the character development was phenomenal. I highly recommend this book!

At first I found this Southern culture shocking given it's late historical time. How could things be so slow to improve? Then, I got into the story, and sadly, somehow, I was convinced that the time in the South was still in that shocking era of how some people were treated. Excellent book. Now it is a movie, which I will go to, but I am always glad I read the book first and allowed the words to create visions in my head. A definite wonderful read!

I read this book when it was first published. What a brilliant story about the lives of black southern maids in white southern houses. What they had to deal with is to most people unbelieveable. What they did by exposing the hyprocacy of white southern families was heartwarming. A great read.

This book was given to me on father's day by my daughter. It only took a couple of pages before I was engrossed in the story. Kathryn Stockett paints a vivid picture of the setting in the deep South against the background of the beginnings of the civil rights movement and the working conditions of the black maids featured in The Help. As enjoyable as Minny's home cooking.

The Help is an excellent look into the daily lives of women affected by segregation in the the South during the 1960's. Kathryn Stockett invites us in to witness the condescension towards and humiliation of characters who become so real to us that we laugh when they laugh; we cry when they cry. All in all, a refreshing taste of the deep struggle, behind the scenes, which took place during the Civil Rights movement.

Rarely do I read a book more than once, however, The Help was an exception. I not only read it twice, I then listened to the audio book. It will make you laugh out loud one minute and break your heart, the next. I loved it!

"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett is an astonishingly powerful novel, one to be read and savored even as the reader skims back now and again to enjoy a particular beautifully crafted paragraph. It is nearly impossible to comprehend that "The Help" is Kathryn Stockett's first book;her ear for spot-on dialogue between the maids and their employers in the South of the 1960's is infallible. After borrowing this treasure from the Public Library,it is now my intention to purchase a copy for my personal library,as it will surely be a favorite for years and years to come.Bravo!

This meandering and self-congratulatory novel perpetuates the trope of benevolent white people "empowering" poor people of color. The civil rights movement was an uprising of African Americans where some whites helped; this fiction work may be a comforting idle but is far afield from how history unfolded. My interest had completely evaporated 50 pages in - only a ninth of the way through!

Pitch perfect! It struck just the right balance between storytelling and message. Stockett doesn’t sugarcoat the racism of the time period in Jackson, Mississippi, but in The Help she finds a way to address it without creating a depressing book. In fact, she stirs in just the right amount of humor, drama, friendship, and hope. Change is often slow in coming, but it can come when people take a stand and face their fears. Skeeter, Minny, and Aibileen make an unlikely trio of heroines, but they take a big chance and help to bring some positive changes to their community and to their own lives. This book touched on all of my emotions at various times. Sometimes I laughed out loud; other times I wanted to cry. There were things that happened that made me furious and other things that gave me hope. Basically, it was awesome storytelling with a compelling message, and it doesn’t get much better than that. I hope the movie does it justice.
